Here are some great books guys. I have read these and they are very good reads... sorry if i am repeating ....

This BOOK IS AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JG26 - Top guns of the Luftwaffe - by Donald L. Caldwell Forward by Adolf Galand....... I can not say how awesome this book is...... a must read for ww2 german buffs.

I Flew for the Fuhrer - By Heinz Knoke a first hand Diary of a German fighter pilot .... speaks for its self... probably one of the best first hand accounts ... let me rephrase ... it is the best account of a german ww2 pilot.

Full Circle - By J. E. Johnson This is amazing read about Dog fighting history ---- and how the USA ended up in Vietnam with a jet with no guns (LOL) the F4.... and soon realized and ultimately changed ... it all comes full circle in the dog fighting world. A Great Read.

All the books I have here are page turners.

Salut!

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/01/18 02:41 PM

Sturmtiger, I've recently begun playing Grigsby's War in the East. I have many books about the war in Russia, but am looking for some new ones. The name that keeps cropping up is David Glantz. I have When Titans Clashed and am curious if you have any recommendations for his other titles. Operational detail is what I am looking for, though first hand accounts are always welcome too. Any other titles you'd recommend?
Posted By: Lieste

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/01/18 08:17 PM

I have a copy of "Kharkov 1942. Anatomy of a Military Disaster Through Soviet Eyes", by Glantz ISBN 0 7110 2562 2

It interleaves Russian archival report of the offensive aimed at pinching out the Kharkov salient, with German records and a reading of the context of both over the course of the offensive and the German response and counter offensive.
Posted By: DBond

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/02/18 12:55 PM

Thanks for the recommendation Lieste, He has quite a few works dealing with finer subjects. So the detail is better. It's funny, but all of my friends and family know of my interest in WW2, so they sometimes buy me books as gifts, but it's always a book that attempts to cover the entire war, meaning it's nowhere near precise enough, and just rehashes the same stuff we've all known for years. I need books that have a much more focused subject, and like your recommendation covering a single battle. That's the stuff.

Glantz also, more than most western historical authors on the Eastern Front, provides more detail through the Russian eye which is great.

Here is a list of his books. Prolific!

I think I'll get Barbarossa Derailed. Two volumes.
Posted By: Lieste

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/02/18 01:06 PM

I also enjoyed most of the Anthony Beevor volumes. The ones I have which cover the Eastern Front are Stalingrad and Berlin. Both were relatively thorough overviews of these campaigns.
Posted By: DBond

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/15/18 03:37 PM

Thanks Lieste for the recommendations. In the end I bought a few new books, operational level eastern front stuff. I passed though on Barbarossa Derailed. I want it, but it's high priced. The soft cover version is going for over $50, and it's four volumes, though only the first two are really needed, the other two are companion volumes, fleshing out the source material. I'll put these on the Christmas list.

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 11/17/18 10:46 PM

"On the German Art of War" or Truppenfuhrung might be a title of interest. Available from Stackpole Books, it is the English translation of the 1930s and WW2 troop doctrine, used throughout the war years, and later forming the basis for FM 100-5

ISBN 978-0-8117-3552-4

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 12/30/18 12:21 AM

Sorry, I just saw your question. Unfortunately I am not a fan of Glantz.

Maybe it is me, but I get a very pro-Soviet vibe from reading his books. I know they won, but it was sometimes in the balance.

Reading him makes me feel that the war was a lost cause for the Germans from day one, and that the Soviet generals were all much better etc.
Posted By: Lieste

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 12/30/18 02:14 AM

I certainly didn't get a pro-Soviet vibe from Kharkov 1942. The initial German reaction to the unexpected Soviet offensive was slightly disjointed, but the much faster OODA cycle for the German forces rapidly reversed their initial setback and brought a catastrophic defeat for a 'Stalin - led' Soviet high command - with the way to Stalingrad open to rapid exploitation over the next few months.

That getting distracted in too many directions and focussing too much on 'strategic cities' caused a German defeat the following winter which was the beginning of the end doesn't detract from the gloomy Soviet view of the Barvenkovo/Illium operations.
Posted By: DBond

Re: A wargamers needful Things book reviews - 01/10/19 08:07 PM

I don't see it either. I've read a number of his books now and I don't see bias. A different perspective perhaps, but that's why I read his work, as post-war writing was necessarily German-centric until the records were declassified.

Honestly I'd love to see a similar treatment given to other conflicts, especially the North Vietnamese and WW2 Japanese sides, which I've always felt have been undertold.
