Birds of Steel takes to the skies

KONAMI and Gaijin Entertainment take the chocks off stunning WWII combat epic

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced a stunning new blend of flight combat and battle theatre genres, with the advent of Birds of Steel for PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Developed by Gaijin Entertainment, Birds of Steel is a breath-taking combat simulator featuring some of the most pivotal air battles of World War II, including the battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, Coral Sea, the historic attack on Pearl Harbour, the Mediterranean Maltese island, Germany’s Ruhr Valley, and others. Players can select how detailed they want each campaign to be, and are offered a wealth of single and multi-player campaigns.

Birds of Steel offers 20 historical and a wealth of fictitious missions, spanning eight world-famous campaigns, and users are given access to over 100 famous planes from the entire axis and allied forces rosters. A number of planes ideal for each campaign can be selected, and have been faithfully recreated in terms of handling, capabilities and weaponry. The classic Spitfire, P-51D Mustangs, and Messerschmidt 109 are all lined up for combat, as players opt to player opt to fight for the Allies, Japanese or Axis forces.

The game features a breath-taking level of detail, with the weather effects of each war zone brilliantly brought to life, while the handling and battle-scarred planes are susceptible to damage and will suffer in terms of control accordingly. Similarly, a series of camera views allow users to witness their skills from a series of external views, or within the varied cockpits of the 100 planes. The missions are presented in a pre-conflict briefing, and players can also see how their contributions related to the overall path of the scenario, with new planes available on the completion of specific goals. Birds of Steel also offers the user a number of control systems, ranging from simplistic arcade-style movements, to entirely faithful control systems that offer total control over every aspect of flight.

Birds of Steel also enjoys a huge online element. Players can support co-op missions alongside friends, or enter massive multi-player online dogfights to see who owns the skies. Gaijin are busy creating a series of absorbing missions for online users, with team death matches, co-op strike missions, airfield raids, and tournament play all set to throw open the skies for the most intense aerial combat ever to grace the PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360 systems. Squadrons can even edit their finest hours to showcase their skills, and share them with their peers.

“For far too long, first-person shooter fans have been tied to the foot soldier point of view, but we aim to bring the seat-of-their-pants skill and daring of dogfighting and aerial combat to a wider audience,” said Martin Schneider, General Manager, Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “Birds of Steel pushes the throttle of realism by giving fans what they’ve been missing when it comes to co-operative online gameplay, incredibly realistic visuals and game dynamics, while spanning the entirety of the war’s air campaigns.”

Cool. Looks like a winner.

Compared to 1C and Ubi Gaijin did a fantastic job with WoP out of the box, it looked and played great on average spec pc kit, delivered a good game with plenty of content and good support with patches and new content.

Hope they don't repeat the same mistakes as WoP and thereby get a broader success on PC this time

- missions that can actually be completed in realistic mode ie designed for pc not arcade mode. No dumb timed missions.
- a real QMB, not 'training mode'
- full mission builder
- better online options

I wish them luck!

What sort of game is this? I see no in-cockpit shots.
It's not a 3rd person shooter is it?

Just quoting myself from the Gaijin forum to save retyping:

Good news indeed! Longer wait than I had hoped for, but I'll take it.

I think that this is likely the WoP2 sequel in the making.

I hope that the pc version will contain more and better Battle of Britain content and some oppourtunities for early (1940/41) forays into France, Belgium, etc. I'm sure Gaijin will implement some of the major improvements that we've asked for so this should be a wonderful addition to the WW2 air war genre!

Obviously, this is planned to be very wide in scope for theaters of operation in Europe and the Pacific so it should have something for everyone.

Nice work and Good Luck, Gaijin!

Can anyone tell me,will there be silly tasks like shooting down so many bombers\planes etc before being alowed to the next mission?
Will we be allowed to continue or fly home and land instead of flying against some kind of time thing?

This looks very nice. I like Pacific Theater as well. I had a hard time controlling and flying with a ps3 controller though, so I'll wait until the "simmed up" version of this game (WoP 2?) is announced.

The graphics look great, but can they improve on the sim shortomings of WoP?

Yeah.. if WoP had those features from the beginning it would be much more popular now..

Re: Gaijin announces new WWII Flight Sim Game - 05/26/11 10:29 PM

Gaijin have had lots of feedback from the community and I expect that they will make some important changes to the format of their upcoming pc based game, whatever it's called!

Having been in this from the Beta stage of the original WoP, I just can't imagine that they will ignore the many suggestions that have been made since the release. They do seem to listen to community suggestions and respond to them, one of the traits that I find very encouraging when communicating with Gaijin.

The outcome of this question depends on whether or not I buy it.I hate timed missions and I hate having to shoot down 'x' number of planes.

Re: Gaijin announces new WWII Flight Sim Game - 05/27/11 01:55 PM

Exactly Chucky. No matter how good anything looks these stupid tasks just make a silly arcade game out of it.

Hopefully Gwalch, they have listened to the feedback from customers.
This has the chance to be a near perfect sim for me.
I silently pray that they do it right.

With you all the way.

Re: Gaijin announces new WWII Flight Sim Game - 05/28/11 05:26 AM

Well, even if the missions that come with the game wouldn't nail it (which I hope they will, but you never know), it only half matters since there will be a full mission editor. Personally I also don't like missions that are timed and have unrealistic objectives. Wouldn't even mind a patrol misson without any radar/map where you never get to see the enemy if you just don't happen to find any, but not sure if that would be everybody's cup of tea. Probably not. But everyone would be able to make missions and share.

Good news from Anton regarding dedicated servers.

On a serious note. MMO as part of it's description is a dynamic online campaign. Does this mean a dedicated live server of sorts?

Anton

If we are talking about consoles - then most likely, no dedicated servers.
For PC we will have dedicated servers, as it is online game.

Better switch to other forum though.
