I have the trees set to 100% on my install and I don't notice where they stop at all. In fact, I can't even see where the trees end in my screenshots above. And with trees set to 100%, my laptop still runs the sim just fine.
Man, this new version sure does look nice! It will be nice if they follow through with some content changes as well. But for now, it's very pretty to fly around in!
Is that tree density at 100%? Is there maybe like a draw distance slider?
It may not be noticeable in your laptop or when playing when there are other things to do or catch your eye but I can see it on the screenshots.... but then again, I'm looking for that end-of-treeline
I am curious, did you guys update your already installed version of DCS or did you do a fresh install of 2.5? I am waiting a while to see how everything shakes out. Great pics by the way.
Edit: Which one do you update? The 1.5... or the 2.0... ?
Ok, I updated to 2.5... . It really looks good in game and my frame rates are decent for my old system, but the ram use is ridiculous. I am posting a pic from Process Lasso which I use while running most of my CFSs. DCS 2.5 is using every bit of my 16 GBs of ram in a mission I made a longtime ago with like either 14 or 16 WWII fighters in a big scrap. There is a little bit of Stutter here and there, I am assuming because the Ram is bottle necked. My Cpu is running like 40% of max. I am assuming they have a bad Memory leak. The graphics look pretty good to me, but when I pause for a picture, it looks perfect in game, but the picture comes out with some very small jaggies if you look close. I think I am going to try Reshade like I had in 1.5 plus 2 or 4 times Sparse Grid Super Sampling and see what happens. Here are some pics from the Aerial Scrap Mission on the Caucasus Map. Enjoy, hopefully the next ones will be better.
Great shots. Mine doesn't look quite that good, but it's good. I like the aluminum finish effect, now. It always looked more greyish than metalic. My F-86 looks terrific. Getting some stutering, though, when the guns fire. Guess I need to turn something down.
Well I finally have spent a little more time in DCS 2.5. It really looks stunning. I sure hope they work at optimizing it better because stutters are a problem. It is a shame because I was going to build a new rig, but with all the CPU compromises and the GPU shortage and high prices, along with Ram high prices, I really can't afford to build now. Well, I am thankful for my present rig and I will just have to wait it out. Here are a few pics from a recent excursion of P51s and Spits vs Fw190s and Bf109s. Enjoy.
I got some stutters first in my system: I5 8500 6core 4ghz / 16gb DDR4 3000mhz / 1070 8 Gb
Fisrt i have dcs in my System / games SSD drive = stutters
Now i have dcs in its own SSD = no more stutters , also setting preload to MIN or least 1/3 from max take those away.
There is still bad memory leak , ED is fixing it. Preload is bugged with it. And its gets crazy in MP
But sure dcs, runs great fps .
My 1060 with same system got 100-120fps in big missions , now i have 1070 and get 120-180fps in big missions
My settings: Ultra vis range, textures high , water high, cicilian traffic low, shadows low / flat terrain shadows / tree slider max / grass 1000 / AF4 / 2xmsaa in monitor use, no msaa in VR use PD 1.4 for now.
Haukka81, no SSD here, old school HDD. thanks for your suggestions but I have an old AMD system with a GTX770 4GB. I think when ED optimizes and fixes the memory leak , then DCS will work better for me. Here are a few more I took the other night.
Great pictures, Blade. Mine doesn't really look all that differently from that at high altitude. That's where I am most of the time, anyway. I knocked it back to Medium. Then I put the Cockpit at 1024. Gotta have the cockpit looking good. Looks fine and runs a whole lot better, now. But I have a 4 year old I7 processor with 2.4 GH and 8 GB of RAMM. 2GB Nvidia card. So, even after they fix that memory leak I'm most likely not gonna be able to max this out.
Been working on my A2A skills in the F-15C using the instant action mission. Today I was able to clear the sky of all hostile fighters, but lost an engine in the process. Still managed to limp back for a landing.
Also - I have to admit, I'm using labels for dogfighting. Just too hard to see the bad guys otherwise...

Same here, learning to fly the F 15 with labels on
Do you guys know how to load up a skin without the decals showing? I assume the red star on the tail and nose number is a default decal?? thanks
AFAIK you can control the bort numbers as decals in the liveries description.lua but roundels and other details are part of the base skin. That's what I did for my Swedish Airforce P-51 Mustangs. (that file will also let you control what countries the skin can be used with)
I'm in a love/hate relationship with the Shark. Might help if I had my stick center-mounted and with an extension, but currently on a side-stick configuration Just getting the thing to fly as you want is an accomplishment in itself!!
I don't know if the flight model changed, but in the version I had, I was able to fly it around pretty well, even landing on buildings (including the airfield tower) and flying under bridges. The problem I had was I got used to hiding behind trees and popping up to strike, and in the version I had, the trees had no affect on the AI. That meant if I were hiding behind the trees, I couldn't see anything, but AI enemy units could see me just fine, and their weapons passed right through the trees and hit me, so it was a little frustrating. I had been flying Gunship!, and it has collidable trees that would block weapons, and had gotten used to that and I had a hard time adapting to Black Shark.
Ah yes, Gunship! Is that the one where some "forests" were a box of trees you can fly into to hide? I loved that game as I had better depth perception compared to EECH so I could fly lower and faster!
They were bunches of trees, and I think treated as a single object, but I thought that was fine because in reality, any two trees closer together than the width of the chopper was basically a single obstacle, and I thought they did a pretty good job of breaking them up, so you had dense areas with gaps in between, and they seemed fairly naturally shaped (i.e., not rectangular). Its biggest issue was it was billed as being a Longbow sim but it lacked the high-end features. I tried to think of it as more of an AH-64A simulator, and in that I thought it wasn't bad. It even supported multiplayer in the same helo, so you could have a human team of pilot and CP/G in the same bird.
Yep! That's the one! I used to practice going inside those clumps of trees Not very successful! But the trees blocked LOS and also blocked enemy missiles which was good! Being able to weave between tree clumps was so cool after EECH's block forests
I would like to have a system that could run DCS as pretty as that....smoothly.
Ya Pooch same for me. This is a pretty sterile environment , me and four bandits. I have only 8 Gbs of ram and need to upgrade as I experience pauses during explosions and such
Now THAT has to be photoshopped? Edited in some way? SweetFX?
All these cool shots of the Hornet but the plain skin just feels lacking to me. Like a sweet muscle car but in old-computer-beige color Where are the cool, cool skins ED was bragging about?
Oh? I thought they shipped with more skins? I remember reading about this on a newsletter:
Quote
Hornet Skins For the Early Access release of the Hornet, we plan to have more skins available than any previous module at the time of initial release. Our first priority is on actual operators of the F/A-18C, and then we will focus on operators of F/A-18A operators and those that were updated.
Wow these are some beautiful shots fellas. I've been a long time away from DCS stuff. Do the hornets come with any campaign and are carriers in the future? Sorry if its a silly question but I've not played DCS in a long time and on top of that ED's way of doing things I find confusing.
I was just checking on the modules on Steam and they are pricey! Maybe one day in the future when they are on sale I could get a couple. Everything, planes and maps are 50-80 dollars a piece! I think what I would want the most are the Nevada map, F-5E Tiger and the Hornet. The Tomcat is defitately a must too whenever that comes out but man they need to start making some meaningful campaigns and carrier ops or something else to get away from the old Crimea map. Do they have any intentions on revamping campaigns, maybe making them more dynamic? It would be cool to see some intrepid third party group come out with a module that does one thing, changes the interface and injects some old school combat sim personality with interactive planning rooms/briefing/debriefing screens. Maybe make some sort of XCOM-like pilot generator with roster management to breath some fun into the campaign scenarios. Not sure how that would work but it would be nice.
Are these part of ED's release or are these Skate's fictional skins?
If DCS is to be a screenshot generator, might as well get the most out of it! On an unrelated note, anyone know how far along the Tomcat module is?
The skins are skatezilla's yes
DCS has elements that make it a great screenshot platform. I would like to have the ability to manipulate aircraft more in the mission editor, but still learning
So I'm following this ai and suddenly it drops its landing gear
I set only one waypoint for the ai and eventually it lands
Yes. I've discovered the free camera mode. I'd like to have the ability to move the camera anywhere I want. So far I've only been able to rotate on the axis
What?? Those previous shots were done without this? Can't wait to see what else you'd "shoot" with free camera! Thanks for the screenshots, they look great!
I think he's trying to ripple a slow MiG21, you know - Canadians.
I want to see that screen shot!
And Bisher, regarding your AI buddy suddenly landing, the AI is lazy, and I've found once it's out of tasks, it'll pack it in and go home. In this case, it hit it's waypoint, so that's all she wrote.
Actually I think I was too low, I was at 13,000 feet. The mountains too were up to 13,000 feet. I believed I slammed into the side of a mountain when I unpaused

Is it just me who thinks that a clean Hornet looks wrong? Especially one that does afterburner with no fuel tanks on? I feel like it's just asking for trouble!

I did not see a single HARV with fuel tanks(after one minute of research). I see I left one pylon on, meant to remove all. So I could have housed a fuel tank
Just a matter of preference, really, I think. Like your last pic, again with no fuel tanks. Just looks wrong. I think of fighter aircraft like a mean machine, a beast with sharp teeth and fangs. A clean aircraft, with nary a fuel bag, looks like an old granny who forgot to put her dentures in
This shot by piper, clean but with a fuel bag (and a Sidey), looks better. It looks like it's going home after a good mission, hence the empty pylons, but needed some extra fuel and that's why it has a centerline fuel bag. A totally clean fighter looks like "I'm just doing touch-and-goes and practicing my traffic pattern approaches"
Glad you agree with me! The screenshot angles/camera work is awesome though. Like I said, you have a great eye for these things!
I've also realized that while I don't like clean aircraft, one with empty pylons looks okay. I guess it just hints at the fighter being RTB after a successful mission.
Load times are significantly quicker with the latest update
I like the new label system as in the dots below, each bomb once released gets it's own dot. It's rather subtle but seems effective. It was cool to watch as bombs fell away from my aircraft with no lettering and track them to the ground
This pic reminds me of a round of golf I had at the Carberry Golf Club in the 90s
We were on the eighth hole when I looked up and there were two CF 18s flying at tree top level. They made three passes at low altitude and it was amazing to watch. I believe the Canadians and Germans were conducting training exercises. CFB Shilo at the time had a German Army Training Establishment ('74 to 2000ish) and military land bordered the golf course
Nice shots bisher. I especially like the carrier takeoff and landing shots. There must have been some anxiety knowing you were on a third landing attempt. I probably would have missed them all and would have needed a helicopter ride back to the ship.
The Hawkeye screenshot is gorgeous. Darkening blue background, puffy cloud, reflected light beneath the surface of the wing and radar dome. I just love naval aviation. Another great shot.
Flying the Huey. I like this pic as I have seen the underside of the Bell 204, from this altitude, quite a bit while I worked for an oil exploration company. The 204 would roll out tv antenna wire from a large spool that sat by the opening of the side door. I was on the ground splicing the wire together.
I was able to set the A4 up today in a JSGME install so that I can remove it easily for future updates. I generated a quick mission today and was sort of amazed at what the generator made. I only got one good pic of the A4, but I snapped a few of the Mig29s in the mission. I also threw in 2 from a WWII mission I flew. I sure hate turning the graphics down but with my old rig I have to. The only way I get pretty good pics anymore is to turn the graphics back up and run the mission at around 20FPS and take pics, LOL. I think they still come out pretty good though. Enjoy!

Nice screens , im intrested what was amazing in that mission that generator made ?
i ask because im really fan of mission generators etc.. just hope that ed would give bit more love to generator and ability to generate campaings , so after mission it would generate next mission based even bit how last one was going

I have just never tried it. In the QMG I found that when I used the advance button and opened it in the full mission editor that it was quite complex. It had ground units, A10s, Helos, F16s, A4s(player + wing man), Mig29s and SU25s. I made my adjustments for skins and load outs and quite frankly could have just used this as a quick template to make whatever I wanted. I am not that familiar with creating complete missions from scratch in the FME and honestly don't have time so this might be a good way for me to create missions and be able to fly quickly. I just found it interesting that after all of these years that I had never really tried this and that I had mostly only flew canned missions or Campaigns. I guess that was amazing to me, but is probably not to most. LOL! Glad you liked the pics. Couldn't resist, here are a few more.

I see
Mission generator is quite nice. I adjust advanced settings in gen and genereate then open it in editor , adjust AI settings , flight plans etc.. and i have mission quite fast ready.

In the QMG there is an "advanced edit" button that will open it directly into the FME. You can then make any FME adjustments you want and you can "Save As" and them go fly it through missions if you do not want to fly it directly from the FME. To me, that is a pretty good set up. I wish IL2 The Great Battle Series had this sort of QMG.
You know, I went into the FME to look at the available skins for the A4, as I had read there are a lot, and I noticed there was no load out. So I changed this obviously while I was there. I wonder how many people find this out and never go in the FME to add a loadout thinking it is just a bug in the QMG?
Beautiful shots folks. I used to try and hit that altitude with the F-15 in Loch On many times. It made me feel like Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff when he pushes his Starfighter to the limit and just as he barely glimpses stars, he falls back to earth.
I think I read a good while ago that they haven't even modelled any crew for them... typical unfinished, no crew to bailout of damaged or doomed aircraft. I suppose they they will say that the game can't deal with that many crew members or it would grind to a halt or something
I plan to introduce enemy aircraft to this mission and see what happens. I'm tempted to purchase a WW2 aircraft module to add to my mustang and spitfire. 109 or 190 would be a nice addition

You can get them both for the price of one since they are having a 50% off sale again. Think the sale runs until Jan 7th?

Wheels
Thanks Wheels, I picked up the 190 and considering the 109 at these prices
Wow, so vertical pics are not downsized? This could be fun.
In the screenshot above, the original pic is of a harrier in the horizontal. I rotated the pic to make the aircraft appear to be in the vertical. Interesting, the pic may even be too large. I did not think I'd ever say that in a screenshot forum
That comes under the heading of, "Well, there's something you don't see every day!" Really though, graphics anomolies aside, the detail on those ships is impressive. The Harrier really tempts me. I'm just not sure that I want another complex airplane, because I hardly fly the A-10 anymore. I sure like it , though. It interests me more than the F-18, actually.

Pooch, it is nice but still suffers from a lot of bugs and unfinished and incomplete features as everything in DCS, which may be fixed very slowly or never at all... The most frustrating at the moment is the CCRP ASL (steering line): it's wonky, unrealistic, sways all over the place and useless. They tried fixing it in the last update but failed.
But if the Harrier module is on sale for 1/2 price then it's worth the buy (this is what I did), but otherwise an unfinished product with bugs is not worth the full price. That's why I haven't got the Hornet I guess.
Vertical landings on the LHA are nice (and stressful)...
And it's not really complex at all! I think it's easier and less complex than the A-10C!
Ok Bisher, back away from the cntrl + * button or the Ed police will be forced to neutralize your keyboard and Ban you for a month! SwineLine is watching you!
Bisher, I've got to ask you, how on earth were you able to pull this much weight and NOT have the vortices show up? I'm trying so hard to get back into this sim but the over-modeled vortices have ruined it for me. I'm hoping there's a mod I've missed or a line of code perhaps? Beautiful shots, as always.
Last couple look like art. Great shots bisher. I'll always remember my grandfather (a Korean War Army veteran) telling me after telling him I saw an F-86 at an airshow, "You didn't see them do what I saw them do".
I keep forgetting to put spoilers and antiskid switch to off for carrier landings... after having it in spoiler only for cat shot...
Spoiler only for taxi Spoiler only for cat shot Off for carrier trap Spoiler and antiskid (both) for runway takeoff Spoiler and antiskid (both) for runway landing
Why are spoilers open for a cat shot when you need every bit of speed you can get? They don't supply lift, as far as I know. They just slow you down, don't they? Jaw dropping detail, though. One of the best looking flight simulators, ever.
Spoilers are only up at idle, as soon as you move throttle they drop.
Don't know why but it's in NATOPS .
(This is different to maneouvre flaps...
and again different to DLC -direct lift control - which uses just the inboard spoilers on aproach for fine flight path adjustment up and down just like the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar)
Also spoilers aid a lot with taxiing, not having to use as much wheelbrake..
As for fps, currently I average 44 fps(1920X1080) en-route to target, dropping to 38 fps over target and release of ordnance, flying a standard mission. A few pauses and micro stutters along the way.
Description: A flight of 4 MiG-25s came screaming in and each ate a Sparrow... but just lost their noses and then tried to land at my base. This comedy of errors ended with each one crashing into the Black Sea as they dropped their gear.
Beautiful shots fellers. I like those low light Hornet pictures bisher. They're kind of spooky cool.
Iamfritz, I really like this screenshot of yours:
errrh. Nevermind. I can't figure out how to post a single picture. I keep forgetting how. I miss when it was much easier to do. The one with the F-15 from behind with just blue sky.
I am not a big fan of DCs right now, but I have to admit that does look nice. I may have to run the update and see if the optimization helps the performance on my old AMD Phenom 955.
One thing they have improved on since it first came out is the Spitfires engine sound... it's pretty awesome I have to say, and probably the best sounding Merlin out there at the moment. Nice screenshot Bish, but one thing that does not look right are those wing roundels. The red centre is too big.
Really nice pics Bisher. Any chance to see some planes during/after hits, round strikes/missile strikes? I haven't seen any of the fire/damage effects in over a year. I am pointedly curious to see what the fire effects look like. Thanks fro any consideration.
It has been just over a year since I uninstalled DCS with a particularly bad tase in my mouth. With a new Rig that is much better suited to flying DCS, I have reinstalled it, and I must say that I had a blast in the Bf109Kürfurst today. The FM was lovely, and I landed it in spite of my rudder pedal toe brakes being inverted so that as soon as I touched down I was skidding down the runway into a tail loop. LMAO, once sorted I practiced a bit of taxing and then took off and continued my flight across Normandy. It seems like ED has done a lot of work on the War Birds and I am now intrigued as to WWII experience. This outing today ran as smooth as silk and the graphics speak for themselves. I may have just found a new best friend in the Sim Hood! Time will tell.
I've taken it on myself to get stuck back into DCS with the Su-25T... I'd forgotten what a little gem that aircraft can be. Relatively easy to learn and fly... getting into relearning the weapon systems at the moment. Another good thing about the 'Rook' is that it's totally free to download with the base game, so anyone that wants to have a play with it can do so at no cost whatsoever.
Nice BM... Yes the WWII stuff is ok in my book. I have all the WWII stuff, maps, assets pack , campaigns, all the aircraft except the P-47, but I'll pick that up when it's cheap enough in a sale. I'm enjoying the Su-25T again... I had all the training videos downloaded so going through them again, and with the updated Caucasus map it, and updated cockpit it's better than ever.
The situation heated up a bit for my adversaries this evening. I have to give ED credit that their fire effects are quite convincing, but the black smoke tunnel that it leaves still needs work. I had some quick mission fun tonight and got 2 kills in 2 hops. Not Bad.
Thanks Coot. Actually my boarder is only the maroon and grey. I guess SimHq thought it wasn't snazzy enough and added the black and the white. Here are a few more from my coastal jaunt.
