They aren't ending the channels, but dropping monetization for under 1000 subs.
There's no money to be made for so few subs anyway.
"YouTube’s new rules state that creators must now accrue 4,000 hours of watch time over the course of 12 months and reach 1,000 subscribers to join YouTube’s Partner Program and qualify for monetization."

They need to refine their system for sure. Bots lock down or give strikes to videos that have nothing wrong with them, while missing videos with obviously questionable content.
I know of some fishing channels that have gotten strikes for showing fish cleaning because of some blood. Some war based video games get demonetized too.
If this helps them to quit cutting back revenue for major channels with full time youtubers, I’m ok with it.
