If anyone is curious, my system is not cutting edge at all:
Core i7 920 (not overclocked) 4g RAM GTX 265 (this is still an outstanding card after 5 years!)
At this stage of the game (63 per cent complete) it runs BOS really well at medium/high settings and the sim is on a whole new level than any sim I've ever played - including CLOD modded. It is quite enjoyable just to get in any plane and do nothing but fly around.
Images are unedited with exception of sharpen tool in irfanview on some of them.
Excellent shots. The Focke-Wulf is a magnificent looking beasty.
Only complaint: no historically accurate swastikas. The rectangle motif on the tail make the omission even more noticeable. Better to just completely exclude them or replace with another symbol.
Very nice shots. I'm very tempted to pick this one up. I see that the FW190 is an extra $20 right now. What comes with the base product?
8 aircraft; in addition to the Namesake IL/2, it also includes early variants of the Pe-2, Yak-9, and Lagg-3. On the Luftwaffe side the 109F-4, G2 and Stuka. (FW190 and La-5 included in Premium) + A basic quick mission mode with 2 maps. + Various multi-player servers.
It's a truly beautiful simulation - no screenshot or you-tube video does it justice. I can only hope they get the flight models to the graphics quality level.
Don't know the exact framerate but on my 3-year old system (i5-2500 @ 3.30 GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX 460) the movement is totally fluid. The feeling of speed is incredible.
My desktop PC with a GTX780Ti can push BOS around maxed out, totally smooth as butter at 2560x1440.
My three year old laptop with a GTX460M needs to have the settings turned back to medium/high but is still playable, I'd say 20-30fps.
Rise of Flight should be a pretty good benchmark as BOS is essentially the same engine. If you're happy with how ROF runs on your PC then BOS should be ok too. It's actually a pretty well optimised engine, certainly a lot better than the slideshow that was CloD when it was released.
I've held off too. Mainly because there's no reasonable prospect of having time to fly, but I've got to say that the screenies are leaving me drooling and very tempted to throw money at 777/1C.
May I ask another thing? Are the bullet impact holes static like in DCS/ROF or a là Cliffs of Dover they appear where bullets strike?
They are static.
Thanks! I just want to specify, that mine was a question driven by the sheer curiosity. To me it's a feature, and not a deal-breaker condition.
I can see why there are pro and cons in both methods, but it's a hair splitting thing. Regardless, as Cold_Gambler said it's absolutely stunning and it gets progressively harder to resist...
I'm really wanting to buy into it- but having played Rise of Flight not barely enough, I really feel bad buying into another one.
Not a big fan of the Russian Front scenarios, but that is a beautiful game. Is there any talk of them adding an Airacobra?
No confirmed list by the devs for any of the post release/expansion materials. I think we will have to wait for the full release before we get any of those details, but the Airacobra would have to be high on the list of possibilities imo.
just from that reaction I can tell you fly gliders ;=)
and on a sidenote: I really think a postive point on BoS is, that it is about the only combat-only sim that gets the weather done really good. Off course, it is a lot easier with winter weather only, but still: the shape and base hight of the convective winter clouds look pretty convincing to me.
BoS if fully released yeah, but finished no. They are still working on improvements to the sim. Also, they just announced the first expansion today which I am very excited for. IL-2 BoS expansion news
There are some really nice touches in BoS. The last mission I flew was early evening.I completed the task but was feeling tired so decided to let the AI land the aircraft because I just knew I was going to bounce the LaGG to destruction yet again.I would have a look around as it went through finals. It was getting dark so the airfield was lit up and the landing lights illuminated on the aircraft, pretty cool. Couple that with ground crew it felt very immersive. It's so close.
Yes BOS looks beautiful. Now if 1C/777 would just open it up and let simmers use it the way they want to it would look even more beautiful in these pictures and in videos.
All lovely screens ! These skins make a huge difference. Do they have a proper home yet, or is it all up to hunting for download links in various forums ?

Medicine Man, I noticed that some of the German planes in your shots show the historical markings. Where are you getting your skins? Also, does this work only for your player plane or can you get all German planes to display the swastika?
I was cycling through the ground vehicles and came across this scene away from the combat. I can only assume that driver of the staff car was shot for his awful driving....
It's the game's visual effect of shells hitting the aircraft in front of me. The smoke lines are from the shells I fired.
Seriously though, this place used to be much more active. It seems there are very few screenshot contributions anymore and that's a shame - used to be some really good stuff posted here.
Wow! Kentucky, is that pic right before this post also from BoS? How did you get that in-hangar shot? The perspective and open hangar door is immersive!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them - they are from the Moscow campaign. The I-16 is a hoot to fly - kind of terrifying when Messerschmitts are around but you gotta work with what you have.
I am finally getting a little flight time. This series is now performing great. I am just going to start trying out PWCG. I am looking forward to it. Here are a few recent screenies.
While I don't prefer the Russian Front as a venue, I have to admit that if I had a few extra bucks to throw around, right now, I'd pick this up. If someone wanted to be up to date with the sim, they would need BoS, BoS and BoK? Plus over a hundred dollars worth of add on airplanes, right?

You can always tell when it is a nice Spring. Everyone gets off the computer and gets outside, which is a good thing. Here are a few from one of the stock mission from last night. BOS/BOM/& the planes of BOK are really growing on me. This Series is really coming into its own.
I think that may be the best picture in this thread. Is it straight from the game or is it photo shopped? Either way it is one of my favorites in here. Very Nice Sir!!! Bravo!
This is from a 45 minute multiplayer mission last night. I flew alone and came into contact with numerous enemies. I did not hit any, but I like to think I gave them a run for their money - in that they did not get me either. Although it was a fun mission alone, I'd love to hear from any IL2 BoX pilots in NZ, or anybody who flies NZ evening hours (my evenings coincide with Fiji, Samoa etc and a desolate part of Russia) - for some comms teamwork.
I was not surprised to meet numerous axis enemies at high altitude:
Some cat & mouse - I thought I was being chased home by a 190 who I had annoyed and I was desperately trying to hide in the clouds. I watched the replay and laughed when I discovered it was a wounded La5 trying to get home also.
Made it. Not a bad landing, if I may say so myself.
I pull off the runway, open the cockpit and consider my RTB a success.
I spend a lot of time on this stuff (skins/liveries), so I love seeing it here. I just wanna thank those of you that have posted some of my work. Means a lot gents, really. Cheers.
Had a little time in the "Brick" today on the Kuban Map. Hate to say it but Loft leaving and Jason stepping in and the Team Stepping up have been the best thing to happen to the BOX series yet. They have now delivered just about everything that the original BOS should have been. Now if they can pull off a good Career Mode, refine the AI even more(what they have done recently is good) and somehow make the ME easier to use, the BOX Series will take off like wild fire. My Hats off to the EXCELLENT job they are doing. Here are a few pics from this evenings session, and yes, I did nail the landing, but I J-turned at the end. Will have to work on that tomorrow, as I am off and plan to check out more of Kuban and the new FMs.
Here are some pics from the 1st mission in the "Sirens of Death" Campaign created by Netscape. It is a scripted Campaign for the Stuka available on the BOS Forums. I have only flown the first 2 missions, but I have thoroughly enjoyed them. The Campaign does not come with Historically correct German skins, but you can use the ME to open each mission and apply whatever skins you have as you desire. I have applied skins with the Hakenkreuz symbols. Hope you enjoy and here is a Link to the post with the Campaign download. Sirens of Death
Thanks Gents. Netscape has done a very good job putting this Campaign together. I haven't always been a very ardent fan of the BOX series, but the leadership change and the Team stepping up and embracing the new direction set for them is really turning BOX around. As far as SP goes, with some more hard work on the AI and a Fun Career Mode introduced, IMHO, BOX could actually finally live up to the IL2 heritage. If they could just make a somewhat simplified ME interface this series would really take off and enjoy an even wider audience. Here are a couple of pics from Mission 2 in the "Sirens of Death" Campaign.
S!Blade<><
P.S. Check out the dirt and scratches on the Canopy glass of the 109. Awesome detail!!! Click on the small pic at the bottom to get a bigger view. Again awesome detail!!!
You may eventually catch some flak at the BoS forums over the hakenkreuz pics though. IIRC those images are supposed to be hidden behind spoiler tags.
Wheels
Thank you Wheels. You know, I didn't know that you weren't supposed to post pictures over there of the HK. To me it is just History, there is no disrespectful intention, but I acknowledge that those markings were used in that War and they should not be forgotten or censored IMHO. To me forgetting the corruption of the peoples minds, the tragedy and the totality of WWII is a very dangerous thing, lest History repeat itself. I do not want to glorify the HK, nor do I even like it much, but it is the True History of WWII. I do not like History to be rewritten or censored to protect me from the Truth. I have often wondered why the Japanese meatball (is there a more correct term for it?) has never been censored? The War that the Japanese caused was on par with that of Germany, maybe not in sheer numbers, but in horrific tragedy. My 2 cents worth, anyway, I am glad you enjoy the pictures.
Very nice, I like the spot camo. Is there a version with the two flak cannon for AT role? I read the book by the German pilot, the one that got the Iron Cross with oak leaves and diamonds etc - really good book.

Yes there is, but the bad part is that each cannon carries only like 12 or 16 shells. It is best to make a recon run and then try an attack run from the rear of the tank for the most successful opportunity.
I have been testing out PWCG 3.0 with the Kuban map added and it is coming along very nicely. Pat does some excellent work and his Campaign Generator really brings the Box series to life. Of course Box still needs some heavy work on the AI, but they have come a Good way along with it already. It is better but still needs some much needed Love. I wish they would just throw caution to the wind and build a great AI like WOFF UE has. I really think it would generate a lot of revenue, but slowly goes the way of progress I suppose. 1C is doing a good job of fleshing out this Sim, I have to admit. The clouds already amaze me, see P40 pic with cloud background, I can't imagine how good this will look with the new multi layered clouds and the extended Horizon. The little details amaze me also, like the 3 Ratas in a row, the lead pilot looks like he is reaching up to adjust the sight. Maybe that is just him reaching up to wipe his goggles, but I caught it at just the right time and it looks like he is adjusting the sight. : Also, the entire skinning Community has produced some awesome skins. Well, hope all enjoy these sweet pics.
Those are custom skins. The stock skins that come with the sim do not carry the hakenkreuz.
Ok I Just installed the sim this weekend (zero mods) and only flew a little bit trying to get my stick/throttle set up and after a belly landing I was looking at my busted up Bf109 sitting in the snow and there was a swastika plain as day on the vertical tail.
Also incurring the risk of getting flamed, am I the only one that everytime I read this thread's title, my subconscious seems to read LESBOS SCREENS instead??
I love looking at the screenshots you guys take of the IL-2 Russian Front series. And now with Operation Bodenplatte coming out, I'm picturing a P-47 done with this same amazing attention to detail, and for the first time in years I'm excited about a new flight sim. Hope they can stick to that Spring of 2018 early release date.
Also incurring the risk of getting flamed, am I the only one that everytime I read this thread's title, my subconscious seems to read LESBOS SCREENS instead??
Nope, lovely pics and skins but count me in as another disappointed one
My second flight in BoS. Got the basic keys assigned and my axis dialed in. However, the flight ended the same as my first. Gotta work on some stuff still...
IIRC - The first shot was just a quick mission dog fight. I was surprised at how easy of a kill the 109 was. Second shot, I think was a quick mission bomber intercept. I was booming and zooming, not paying attention to altitude. Finally I boomed too low and wasn't able to pull out before I pancaked into a field.
CBSIKentucky that second pic is really nice, it went into my collection of Favorites. Piper, nice P39 shot, I haven't even had time to try it, but I am off tomorrow. I don't see myself being very productive, but I think I will be entertained most of the day. Here are a few I took last night. The graphics are awesome, but I think I am going to have to dial it back a bit to get decent(30-50FPS) performance from Box. Of course that is because I am using an old PC I built 7(?) years ago that needs a new build to replace it, but the money isn't there right now. The land textures are amazing to me. I saw Ankors name in the credits and I am thinking that he had something to do with the bumpmapping(?) land textures or what ever method they use now. He did awesome mods in ROF. Enjoy!
Nice "Duck" attack CBSKentucky. Here is my first flight in the Cobra. Still working with my graphics/FPS sweet spot. Sorry AA was set at 2 and Sparsegrid at 2 also. I don't like the jaggies so I think I will up each one individually in my next flight and see if I can keep 40 FPS and have less or no jaggies. It is getting to be a balancing act with my old Rig!
I haven't flown a P-39 since the old IL2... I'm enjoying the feeling of nostalgia. Now, time for the dreaded 'spin of death' in this version... It took me quite a while before I got the hang of it last time. (more pics will follow)
Trooper, what is with all the haze? The new Stalingrad map is really nice. That new coloring or whatever they advertised a while back to make the winter setting look more "Wintery", well i like it. Here are some pics from an early morning mission. It looks awful dam cold to me.
S!Blade<><
BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, that looks colddddddd!!!!vvvvvv
You guys are enjoying Kuban too much. I don't have it yet. But I intend to get it. Gonna pick up that Spitfire with it, too, I think. In the mean time, the improvement in the Stalingrad map is dramatic. I actually was very disappionted in it when I first purchased the sim during the Christmas sale. Regretted not getting Kuban instead. It was flat, lifeless and colorless. Now it's filled with more trees and the ground has dips and rises and it's much more interesting to fly over and look at the countryside. I've flown over the Kuban map online and I'm looking forward to it, and of course adding those planes to my hanger. Nice shots!
Well, I am still alive after 2 missions in my E7 campaign in BOS. My Rata Campaign didn't go so well. After 3 missions I got killed by a hungry pack of 110s. I cannot seem to figure out how to continue that even though I have the settings on normal? Has anyone figured out if you can continue if you fail a msiion and die in it? I did not have it on "Iron Man" mode??? Here are a few from my E7 Campaign on a mission to attack a Russky airfield. Enjoy. Nice pics Gents. Is it me, or is the water just to blue? Theses are rivers and as I recall they didn't use to be blue. Or were they? Anyone? S!Blade<><
It really is a beautiful game, and just incredibly well optimized. I'm playing it on high settings on a four year old AZUS laptop. 2.4 quad core processor, 2 GB GeForce video card and 8 GB of RAMM. And it runs without so much as a burp.

Yea. I have to agree. I am playing on my old AMD Phenom II 955BE with a GTX770 4 GB on Balanced with 4x Sparse Grid, managing 59FPS most all of the time and it still looks pretty good to me. I can't imagine having a new rig with the latest 10 series card. I can't get rid of all of the jaggies and get the 59 FPS, but my screenshots still look pretty good to me. Hopefully I will build a new rig for Christmas, maybe.
LMAO Bisher. A Beautiful first picture. My first suggestion is , damaged or not, make every effort to land her with wheels down, not the cockpit down. My second suggestion is, reread the first suggestion if it still doesn't seem clear to you from this moment forward. I cannot honestly say I have not done that, but I can Honestly can say that I have not done that, and posted a picture of it! It is a good thing we can push Escape and then refly.
It is pretty amazing as to how far BOX has come both operationally and graphically. If you look from the first page of this thread until now, the visuals alone have improved exponentially over the 4+ years it has been available. The landscape textures, the clouds with the cloud mod, the Mountains in Kuban, the river beds, the road textures and especially the complete overhaul of the Stalingrad and Moscow map textures. The planes themselves with all of FM improvements and now the 4k templates & skins. The AI improvements, which are coming along slowly and have quite a ways to go, but they are happening, TY 1C AI guy!!! All of the adjustable graphics settings and presets that allow each person to tweak all they like, or just choose a preset. The MP having the professional servers or private quick launch dogfight or Coop servers. The "Mods On" ability to let creative players bring out more possibilities of variation and immersion depth in BOX. PWCG, giving more possibilities to SPs to have another, in parallel with the Official Career, immersive pilot Career opportunity. All of this, not to mention the 1000s of lines of code that we never see at work just to make this possible, culminates in a Very, Very Good Combat Flight Simulator. 1C, please keep working on the AI for us SPs, it is not there yet, but it is getting better & better with each addition of your hard work revising and improving it. I am not going to single anyone out, so to the WHOLE of the 1C TEAM, keep doing what you are doing, try listening to your Customer base as much as you can and keep working hard to make the whole IL2 Great Battles titles the best that they can be. Thank you to 1C for rescuing BOS and bringing us to the point we are at now with the BOX series. I am looking forward to what you can do with BOBP and my personally Beloved P38 Lightning. Here are a few pics from beginning to present, spread over several posts here in the coming days and hours as a little tribute to how far Box has come. Hope you enjoy.

Some of my first pictures in BOS, 10/9/2014 through 10/20/2014, showcasing the dreaded "bubble of blur" in the first 2 pics.
A little "Bug" I found in an early update. This was known as the "Tuck & Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" or "Winging It!" bug.
Not much time for Sims in the summer, but captured this beauty in a quick scenario mission. Right before I was shot down and turned her into a ball of flames!
Yes it does. 1C has done a great job of conveying that sense of offensively "cold" when they re "hued" the environment. Not sure that is a word, but it sounds right????

I am off today, 7/3 - 7/8, so I am hoping to get a bit of flying in. The weather is just to good to stay inside though. I am off to bed and up & out at the crack of dawn for a 60mile road bicycle ride, then off to my sister's for burgers, hotdogs, baked beans and watermelon, and maybe after all of that I will sit down to fly in the evening. To all in the USA,
HappyIndependenceDay!!!!<----------Did you see what i did there????.....Well, did u?????
Me again. I found a fun mission over on the Il2 Forums. Butcher in the Mountains!. It starts out as a rainy day at the Aerodrome, but after takeoff your flight breaks through the clouds and this is what ensued. It is so awesome the way the mountains tower above the clouds in Kuban. The second and last pics show this low cloud base very well. Up close it looks a bit sketchy like DCS, but once you get a ways away it looks awesome to me. These pics were with Mods on and the cloud mod, effects mod. Enjoy.
Beautiful screenies Blade! I will have to check out that mission- thanks for the heads up! Just got the beautiful Kuban map (and pre-ordered the Premium Edition of Battle of Bodenplatte) for my upcoming B-day (my wife was happy to let me pick something out). After the flat terrain of Stalingrad and Moscow, it's a real pleasure to fly among the beautifully rendered mountain peaks. Just don't find yourself stuck in a box canyon in a Ju-52!
I put together a very short video to showcase some of the new scenery:

Loved it Sir, and Loved the music as well. Very nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
I really got a kick how you cut from causally flying through the mountains in the 110 to air combat. I laughed when the wing fell off as the aircraft was plummeting to earth, blissful music playing in the background. Not sure that was your intent but I really enjoyed that
Nice pictures Docjonel, although the flames still look to Hollywood to me. The flames from TFS's CLOD 4.13 were the best to me. Even the new ones in Blitz look over the top. Nice pics though.
Thanks Blade. I agree- the flames should be more dense and streaming more in the slipstream. They are not intense enough IMO. Can't wait to see more combat screenies when the P-47, P-51, and Dora come out. Would love to run some coop ground attack missions in the Thunderbolt.
Great pics, but surely that can't be BoS... the aircraft have correctly marked skins... lol!
Thanks Trooper. Hey, I just want to make sure that you know that with "Mods On" you can use these mods in the link I am providing to change the default 1C non historical skins to Historically correct skins. These will change any AI default skins to HC skins and show up in any mission or Campaign that you fly, including PWCG, Career and Scripted Campaigns. Maybe you already know this???
Yes mate... I use that mod, I hate seeing screen shots with the ridiculous politically correct skins that come with the game. It's also another reason that I enjoy WoTR... the stock game at least comes with correctly marked aircraft
And Now for something completely different! Well, ..... not really, ...... but I really like that as a catch phrase, so deal with it! Help a brother out! Some body post some new BOX pics, please.
Just flew a mission in PWCG Bodenplatte campaign.... before my flight of four Spit IX's had even reached enemy airspace we intercepted a flight of 109's. The fight was taking us below then above the cloud base and back again... before we knew it, some Fw 190's joined the fray, it was a desperate battle, seat of the pants stuff! I scored hits on a 109, then was bounced by a Fw... my Spit was like a colander but still flying. I legged it for my home base, flat out and on the deck... the Fw pilot following. In the end I lured him into a turn fight and managed to shoot him down. With my engine damaged now, I coaxed the old girl down to my airfield... gripping stuff, I'm lucky to be alive
Somehow I don't think that is what CBSKentucky had in mind when he started this thread. To me it is annoying. Tom_W , would you Please consider not posting skin advertising pics here. You post them in all the relevant threads and I am sure anyone interested in BOX will see them without you posting them here also. Thanks for your consideration in advance.

Good Point!
Nice screenshots too.
by the way, I don't advertise anything, since I unlike many, contribute for free my work to the flight sim community ... and have been doing that over 17 years now, SimHQ included.
Yes, but your pictures are always against a blue background with nothing interesting going on in your pics. It is just you showing skins. This is a Screenshot thread which most would like some interesting content in the actual picture not just your latest skin on a blue background. There are plenty of skins threads throughout the many forums that you all ready post on. Help it be interesting in this thread and keep the pics here of an artistic nature and please do not turn this into just another skin thread.
I host my images at our LOF server, I cannot post Il-2 Sturmovik images with a background other than the sky or the sea due to bandwidth limitations, you can see that by browsing this thread,
I hope you at least like the aircraft livery, takes a lot of work to make a skin before I can take a screenshot of it.
I've been appreciating the effort of skinners for years Tom, the beautiful skins on these amazing aircraft has kept me motivated posting screenshots for all these years
this Spitfire MkVb was destined to fly with the 52FG 4FS, delivered at Shaibah Airfield MU Iraq 1942. Awaiting being painted and readied for delivery it received temporary markings
Tom, on your I-16 pics, you manage to get a drab looking colour on the aircraft, but from some angles you then see a high gloss finish. Is that intentional, or a limitation with the skin?
some parts are wood and some are metal, they reflect accordingly, you gave me an idea - it is under each livery done , so going to release an unpainted version today.
Great screenshots. Love your skins Tom! These "flat" shots don't convey how much more solid and photorealistic this sim looks in VR. A totally different experience.
I loved reading about WW2 fighters as a kid. I laboriously built a 1/32 scale Revell P-51D and was thrilled a few years later when I bought a book on the air war and found a photo of "my P-51" in flight, complete with the exact same markings and serial number as the model in my bedroom. That model was gone after the infamous garage sale that took place when I was at college. To be fair, my parents were moving house and I might even have given permission to sell it, much to my later regret. But I recently downloaded a P-51D skin from the IL-2 Sturmovik of E2 S, serial number 413926, my beloved plane, and now can fly it in VR. What times we live in!

CBSKentucky, I honestly think that JU88 pic is one of the best pics I have ever seen you post. I really like the straight up dead on frontal view for pics. Many of my favorites from ROF, CLOD, TGBS, WOTR, WOFF and even DCS have been from this posture. Don't know if you ever viewed this but in my AAR: Christmas Convoy, at the bottom of the link below, I have some very similar pics, just not at dusk or sunrise, although the mission was at 8 am. Check it out, it is kind of eeri as one of my pics has the moon in the background also. LOL. Anyway, great pic Sir!
