A British Short 184 was the first aircraft to sink a ship in WW1 - see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Type_184

However - your question was, if torpedo aircraft were developed in WW1. So, yes, they were.

Behold the Albatros W.5, with torpedo: Developed from the single W.3. According to Gray and Thetford's book German Aircraft of the First World War, five machines were supplied to the Navy between May 1917 and January 1918, "by which time the ideas fo ruse of torpedo aircraft had been abandonded."

An impressive sea plane indeed - thanks for the picture, Jim. Do these strong rods connecting the ailerons mean, that only the upper aileron was cable-controlled, and the lower just moved with it?

Very nice picture yea I noticed that Olham I also noticed they pointed the prop cap on a pusher, I wonder how much a difference that made the Brits just threw a old prop on its pushers, alot of detail in that trolley too looks like big wheel front and a smaller swivel wheel on the rear something they didn't put on early airplanes a swivel wheel
