Hi Guys,
Those of you who know me will realise that I have been building plastic aircraft kits since the late 1950's. In the beginning my knowledge of German aircraft was limited to Me 109, Me 110, Fw190, He111, Ju87 and 88 and perhaps a few others, like most kids of my generation. So when Frog introduced a Me 410 and an He 219 in the 1960's I grabbed them without really knowing anytyhing about them - that came later.
The 410 came in 2 versions,an A-1 "bomber" coded 2H+DA, with the D in green. Camo was the usual 2 green uppers and light blue unders. The alternative which I initially built was a A1/4U with a BK-5 50mm tank gun as a bomber destroyer, codes just BK with the B in yellow with a red outline. Camo was two green uppers with light grey unders and fuselage sides, mottled with green and grey. Are these accurate and which Geschwader do they come from?
After a while I got bored with the BK-5 version, removed the 50mm cannon and having bought William Green's "Warplanes of the Third Reich" added an under fuselage pannier with 4 x 20 mm cannon. In due course that went into the spares box, and now many years later I have managed to get another one from E-Bay. I am now trying to decide which version to model and how to paint it. The A-1 bomber has some appeal, perhaps in the markings of KG51 Edelweiss, but I rather fancy a fighter version, perhaps with the 21cm twin rocket tubes under the wing and beefed up cannon/mg armament but nothing too fancy - perhaps changing the 2x7.92mm to 12.7mm and adding an extra pair of 20mm - I will have to research which Rursatz that is.
What I need from you and possibly from Fran Zee and Knegel in particular as our Luftwaffe experten is accurate colour schemes. Did they still have green wings in 1944 or had they gone 2 tone grey for example. If anybody has any colour schemes I would welcome them.
Cheers,
Peter
