G'day Doug..et al.

Having a lot of trouble on this site and many other sites
with the National Geographic Channel's flash advertisement
for airline disasters...

It affects the sites it is embedded in causing freezing,
slowing and even disabling the site entirely. I'm using
Firefox but it causes grief with IE also..

Hi Ade,

with firefox you can dissable all advertising stuff.

Then the site is nice clean and load fast.

Doug

Not impressed with your non response to this post!

So I'll try once more!!! get rid of the National Geographic
flash ad at Sim HQ it badly interferes with, slows down and/or
freezes completely
the following procedures - using IE7 or
Firefox with ads disabled:

1) logging on
2) Private mail answering
3) Posting pics from photo repositories.
4) Editing a post
5) Setting up a new post
6) general browsing on other sites

This badly done ad is absolutely everywhere on the net,
sites may cow tow to the advertiser for support but this ad
does a first class job of turning people off using the site it
appears on.....definately not user friendly..avoiding sites it
turns up on at all cost....

Some one like to talk to The National Geographic Channel and
enlighten them about optimised Flash graphics for web sites?

You forgot to mention the Search forum function, which doesn't work!

Ade,

Seriously consider switching to Firefox.

No ads, more secure, faster. Better in every way.

Ade .. I think .. if you post your remarks (rants) In the site feedback forum it's more luck this will be read by the administrator.
That guaranteed not there will be an answer .. of course.

Col, I assume you were kidding about the search function remark. It does work.

ade,
Sorry we didn't repond in a timely manner. It's a big site and we're all busy. Remember, you can always email the webmaster, or as WC said, post in the Feedback Forum.

I'll mention this to Doug and we will get back with you.

Nope, he's not kidding. Does not work for me either when I search keywords.

I've not been able to find anything since the last BIG site rebuild. frown

Give me a specific example of a search that does not work and I'll be glad to check it out. I'm not doubting you, just not my experience.

Right then 20mm, here goes what I'm finding.

First moan. Why are the all the archives only search-able from the search inside the archive? I just stumbled onto the link, which I thought was available off the normal search tab. That's a bit silly.

Second, I cannot get any search returns from the EAW archives 1, 2, 3, and 4. Only 5 seems to work.

I tried searches for keywords: 3dz model, tmod, tmods, converted, rebuilt.

Perhaps you can explain why, when I get no returns, I see this message:

I then have to log on again to do another search! banghead

To be honest, I'd given up trying to find stuff a long time ago, as I never got any returns, I've found it easier to do a web search, where the threads showed up.

Oh BTW. What happened to the Skunk Works thread? You asked if there anyone wanted a thread kept active, after the last rebuild. There was a sticky remember? nope

Try searching FS-WWI under the Fighter Squadron forum. You will get nothing and that's what just about every topic is about these days. I keep getting: There are no results for your query. Please try a broader range of search criteria.

I suspect it has to do with the dash, I did return some hits when I took that out. But I see your point.

I'll pass this along to the head honcho. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed on this stuff.

Thanks for grabbing this Tom. 20mm is the man with the plan and will let Doug know.

As Weird-C stated, we aren't omnipotent so we don't always see threads. If you are having a specific problem or concern the best thing to do is either e-mail Doug personally (guod@SimHQ [dot] com) or post something in the feedback forum or simply PM him. He has the job of keeping oversight on over 20 different sub-boards on this site alone, plus formatting articles, ensuring the site is up and running, paying bills, dealing with staff whining and so forth.

If you put up a post and a forum is busy the thread may be buried long before he even has time to notice.

Doug will look at what is the problem and is very concerned about problems that effect the site.

Thanks WC, Pat and Tom, see what you can do...

Ray.

Using Firefox m8, but not inclined to disable images
as I like to be aware of efficient sponsors ads,
also I'm posting up and using image sites frequently.

Sorry guys, didn't see this thread till 20mm pointed it out to me. Have to leave for work (the other job) but I'll go through each question bit-by-bit.

Anytime there is a problem and I don't respond within a day or so, please PM me with the thread link. I'll not ignore a thread, but I can and do miss it.

Ade,

For Firefox 2 I use an addon called Flashblock, it stops Flash from automatically playing on page loads, replacing it with a button. Then if you wish you can play the flash by pushing the button. Very handy in general especially for heavy laden Sites. Not sure if available for Firefox 3.
