Despite all the handshakes I'm sure there was more bitterness than not. Hell of a war to have to survive. Like WWI it's simply incredibly depressing to imagine.

A lot of life lived in those hands and faces. I'm always amazed at everything there eye's witnessed and changes they saw just in their in their lifetimes.

It so happens that I was just reading about the Gettysburg campaign today; more specifically the major schism between Lee and Longstreet over how to conduct the battle which of course ultimately led to the disasterous Picket's Charge.

It's all history now, but to some poor #%&*$# stuck on the line that lucked out and survived I'd be the most bitter thing alive right up to my bitter death.

50 thousand dead at Gettysburg alone over a couple days. I'd be pissed too.
Total was ~46,300 with ~8,000 dead. (Wiki)
Other sources say ~51,000. such as https://www.phil.muni.cz/~vndrzl/amstudies/civilwar_stats.htm
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Had Stuart's flanking move worked, Pickett's Charge would have been looked at historically as one of the most brilliant moves in the history of warfare.
My Great Great Grandfather (on the left) Fought at Gettysburg. He was in the PA Buck Tails. His, his brother and cousins names are on the PA Monument. They were kicked out of their church for going off to war (Quakers).
