Always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.

My daughter would love that. She had an early fascination for E-Coli ~ she thought it was very interesting... My preference is the T4 Bacteriophage, but I can accept her different opinion.

Wow, cool. Virus as antibiotic; how has this
been around for 60 years and had no traction in
the west? Is it because it wouldn't be patentable,
so no one could make money on it?

Oh, but it is patentable!

Just move a few genes around (or insert a few) and it's definately patent worthy.

The Billion USD or so for testing and approval is a huge deal, though, for companies. And yes, it would have to go through all the trials and stuff as if it were a brand new drug or procedure.

And we don't have a lot of e. coli problems here, so it's not a priority. When very few die of something, companies don't see a market for it that will justify the cost of the R&D and approval.

Not to mention that if one had a bad reaction to a treatment in the Soviet Union that was just too bad. Protest against the government loud enough over dangerous things it's doing and get a ticket to Siberia; problem solved. Not quite an option in the West.

I was more intrigued by the "has been seen to have potential
as a therapy against multi drug resistant strains of many bacteria"

If it is patentable, you'd think they'd be
all over it, as MRSA is clearly on the
verge of being a big problem. Maybe they
are, now, but haven't been at it long
enough to have anything to show for it.
Which is perhaps strange, as the need for
a new alternative to our wantonly overused
antibiotic arsenal has been apparent for
over two decades.
