The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed a ship to sink a fishing trawler that was swept away more than a year ago by the tsunami off the coast of Japan and is now adrift near Alaska.

The crew of the Coast Guard's 110-foot CG Cutter Anacapa plans to assess the deserted trawler's condition Thursday morning, said Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow.

If its assessments are satisfactory, the crew will attempt to sink the vessel, named the Ryou-Un Maru, with the 25-millimeter cannon on board the cutter, Wadlow said.

The rust-stained trawler is part of a giant debris field in the Pacific Ocean that was generated by the devastating wall of water that struck northeastern Japan following a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011.

I'm surprised it's still afloat.

I wonder what they will find on board?

Or an Alien computer virus that takes over the coast guard's ship on board systems.

You watch, like after WW2 Japanese soldiers were found years after the war ended in remote places still alive.
Makes you wonder if anyone is still alive on board.

wouldn't sinking it cause any gas/oil to then seep out? I can't imagine they'd empty any tanks prior to sinking her...

My bet is that this is a simulation where three enemy attack boats will spring unexpectedly after the Coast Guard ship gets near enough the larger sinking vessel. An unwinnable scenario will ensue, where the Coast Guard's Anacapa crew will be tested in battle.

From here on known as the Ryou-Un Maru scenario.

Interesting. If they wanted to scuttle the ship, I am sure they can find a better way than firing a cannon at it. Probably wouldn't be as much fun though.

Even more fun, find a whole bunch of ships like this and have two USCG ships out there and let them play live action Battleship.

LMAO! biggrin I was thinking the exact same thing upon reading the original post!

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

An enterprising pirate would capture this ship and sell vacation packages to it, with caviar and champagne, and charge out the geegee (don't ask me what a geegee is, it was a fav of my mom-in-law; pronounced gee like in geek).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency studied the problem and decided it is safer to sink the ship and let the fuel evaporate in the open water.
