Help me pick out a suitable first communion gift for a boy. I was thinking it'd be hard to go wrong with a nice rosary, but between having made my own first communion almost 40 years ago and being a lapsed Catholic for about 30 years I probably forgot some other appropriate gifts.

A Bible embossed with his name and a remeberence from you and his mother written on the inside cover is good.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

That's a good idea, too. I got one for my godson on his baptism and just hadn't thought of it for first communion.

I think the Bible or the Rosary. I used my First Communion rosary for a long time. I have one now - not sure where you could find it - that was made in Israel from olive wood. Here's one spot that you could look at various things: http://catholicsupply.americommerce.com/store/c/275-First-Communion.aspx
"For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Matthew 5:11
Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James 5:11

Oh: Another, which he may use forever, is a Roman Missal. They are sometimes a bit pricey though, but honestly, I have an inexpensive one I've had for more than 40 years now.
They used to have them in most churches but now it seems more and more it is just the hymnal.

A nativity scene with Star Wars action figures. Just like in Star Wars there were a lot of good men there and only one woman. Seriously, though, I got a book of saints that I liked (and actually read). And a silver book marker.

Best bet: just ask his parents. In these parts First Communion is at age 6, Second Communion and Confirmation at 11 or 12. My son will be having his First Communion in two weeks, and he'll be getting a bike, a writing set, a bunch of books, dvd's and puzzles, just to give you an idea. But indeed, you can't go wrong with money

I am Catholic, and for my first communion I got a bunch of toys from my relatives. Thankfully, no bibles or other similar devotions were among them. After all, I was a kid in 3rd grade. How common are Catholics in Germany? I am under the impression that Germany is a decidely protestant country.

That wasn't the question, but nice derail. Thanks for playing.

How common are Catholics in Germany? I am under the impression that Germany is a decidely protestant country. Latest member* numbers are from 2013: Roman Catholic: 29.9 % Protestant: 29% Without Confession: 33% Islam: 4.2% Orthodox: 1.7% Most Catholics in Germany are concentrated in the South and South West. Both Catholic and Protestant churches lost around 3-4% of their members since 1990. *Members who are paying Church taxes. Many are leaving the Church to be exempt from church taxes. There are no credible numbers on how many are actually faithful to a certain confession.

Why men throw their lives away attacking an armed Witcher... I'll never know. Something wrong with my face?

Thanks Jayhawk. The numbers were quite a bit different than my presumptions.
