The TSMC 40nm process that makes the ATI HD58xx cards and Nvidia Fermi (G300 when it comes out) stay bad. So much for the promises to be fixed by Christmas.
The HD58xx and Fermi will stay rare until at least April or May (end Q1). But, supplies may stay poor even longer. Remember, TSMC is in bad shape -- they canceled their 32nm process altogether (concentrating on trying to make the 40nm and unfinished 28nm processes work).
Bottom line, HD5870 and HD5970 will remain rare. Fermi (G300) will remain non-existent (except for perhaps a few to support a "paper" launch).
I keep pinging Newegg and occasionally hit on an HD58xx or HD5970 (there is an in-stock HD5850 there as I write this -- and when I went back to double-check an in-stock HD5870 had also hit the page). So, they can be had, if one is persistent. Thing is, prices will probably rise further due to the shortage and no competition, I speculate (that HD5870 is $440).
