Well due to the rubbish that ubi hands off upon release with this franchise, I stopped purchasing at SH3. This was played heavily thanks to the works of people like grey wolves who made the game a far more enjoyable experience.

So the question lies. With the modding community out there and any available mods. What is the best bang for your buck with regards to the next iterations. Is it SH4 or SH5 or are they still buggy and not worth it until they reduce in price more.

Thoughts on a postcard please,

I've just re-installed SH4 (inc Wolves of the Pacific add-on) and SH5 this weekend.

SH4 I have yet to mod but I will get around to it. I have used the Trigger Maru and the Real Fleet Boat mods in the past so I need to get reacquainted with them.

SH5 does offer better graphics and I think a better experience, but it HAS to be modded. Out of the box it sucks donkey balls.

I am just trying out the Wolves of Steel megamod for SH5 and it's very impressive.

Subsim has it all but I'm sure you know that.

As for bugs, well I'm pretty casual in my approach to the SH series,I have personally never come across any game-stopping bugs that I noticed. If you can find them at the right price I'm sure you won't be too disappointed.

Love SH4, even though it still has a few bugs. Best PTO sub sim ever.

You can pick up SH$ or 5 or a special addition pack for 9.99 from the ubi http://shop.ubi.com/store/ubiemea/en_IE/...vars.falsesite.

Which is the best version.

Which Mods for the Wolves of the Pacific should I use. I know RSRD for convoys, but are there any others mods that improve the sim? I was told the Trigger Maru just made the Japanese ludicrous in hunting you.

Any suggestions should be great.

Well, there's also Real Fleet Boat, which I (ahem) compiled (ahem). biggrin I focused more on the historical realism side of things when compiling the mod.

SH3 still has a special place in my heart. I did enjoy SH4 but the broken convoy AI in the out-of-the-box sim absolutely killed the immersion for me often enough that I haven't gone back to it in a very long time.

+1 on the recommendation to check out subsim.com, but I too get overwhelmed when I look through all the available mods. If you use JSGME, it's pretty easy to download a bunch of mods and try them one at a time to find the one that you like best.

Depends on your preferences and mods in use. I personally hate playing as the Axis so SH4 with RSRD and TM is much better biggrin

Gamers Gate had a deal to get SH3, 4 complete, and 5 for $5.99. I'm looking forward to getting back to sinking some ships.

The mod choices are definitely overwhelming. Guess its going to be a trial and error thing for a while.

the one thing that bothered me about sh4 / sh5 is the stupid number of available mods yet absolutely no community effort to make a single mod that integrates all of the universally popular mods available.

the installation process for sh5's mega mod list takes over 2 hours and half the files required need to be scavenged from random internet sites with no links available on the subsim.com page. really off-putting.

someone needs to consolidate the mods and make a simple installer.

Actually some of the mega mods for SHIV like Fall of the Rising Sun or Trigger Maru used many of the popular mods.

The problem is that what is popular for one person may not be for another. So the mega mod guys put together what they want or think people would want.

Just a tip! When you buy do not buy the Steam version of SH5 since TheDarkWraith's many fixes do not work on it!

Exactly, and that's what I did with Real Fleet Boat. There's a lot of work in that one which was created by people other than myself.
