It's fun running into people you know in public servers.

Here's Birdski (#00) beating me (#13) to the line in a sprint race tonight:

I'll have video of the final lap, probably in the morning. Good fun. biggrin

Are you two by chance using comms? It really can be an advantage on a plate track, especially in a public server.

We were on the public teamspeak that the server was using; we weren't using it to plan moves though.

Good fun Lugnut, I tried for awhile to push you but Daytona gives me fits when trying to hold the bumpy line and i never quite got my turns completely timed with you and greed eventually took over. smile I only won because you pushed me past Stover when he left the inside open so thanks, it could have just as easily been a 4th place finish. I'd of course do the same for you when the opportunity next presents itself.

I was just waiting for you to make a move at that point. SP and I had tried our run on the outside but he wasn't able to get up there and push, so I figured my best shot was to shove you past and then try to get ya off turn four. Almost had enough momentum, just not quite enough.

The only time I saw Birdski online I wrecked him at Talidega. I now avoid those servers.

That's terrible!

Not that you wrecked him. That you avoid those servers. wink

Everyone wrecks/gets wrecked.

I've mentioned it before, but I'll go ahead and plug it again.

I try to hop online for some racing when I can in the evenings; most of the time it's VHR but I'm always open to suggestions.

Usually I'm on one of the UDR servers. If you sort them by name, it usually appears as: ! UDR 6.0

They have two regular series that run on Sundays and Wednesdays, but other nights they just run open public races - usually at Talladega/Daytona.

There's another group I ran with this past Sunday that does open races, but keeps track of points. I'm not worried about their point standings, but the race itself this week was very fun. It was my first time racing with them; we raced 80 laps at Michigan. It was also my first time running that track with this mod. Thankfully someone sent out a setup to use, and it was a good one. My qualifying time was pretty far off so I started 14th out of 23 drivers, but the car was so good that I was running with the leaders in less than ten laps. The racing was spectacular and I'm hoping to run with them again as soon as possible.

Many years ago, I used to race online with the Papyrus NASCAR sims, almost every night. Public racing mostly, you'd never know who you were going to be up against or what would happen...but it was fun. I think that's what I missed most during the years when I was inactive from sim-racing...just joining regular public servers and going for broke. No points on the line, just good clean fun. wink

It's not quite as easy with rFactor as it was with the NASCAR series, mainly because of all the different mods people run - the online community is heavily splintered. But there's still races to be run, so I'm gonna run 'em. biggrin

UDR is a pretty fine bunch but I do get so tired of Talledega/Daytona which is what they run more often than not. I would say the VHR lads I enjoy running with the most are NBSR and MCOPY's gang. I think thats what you're referencing above Lug. They use the race points manager so it all gets tracked but for me its all about the fun. As of late I'm definitely been on a VHR bender since Indy a few weeks ago. Had a hoot at Pocono, Michigan and even the Glen. Now the short tracks are coming up which admittedly are not my strongest suit but fun none the less.

I do, much appreciated. I have a good Mich, Pocono and Glen set as well if you or anyone else is interested.

Which VHR server is it?

I might get some time, not that I'd be anywhere near the front.

Most nights I'm on the "UDR 6.0" server. But really I just sort the list by # of players and jump into something running VHR, if there's something out there.

I ran on a different server last night, did some races at Bristol. Short tracks are always fun; here's the last few laps of one of the races:

You were looking quite sporty last night Lugnut. Nicely done. Tried your set on one race and it felt good but I'm sure I was over driving it and by lap 10 the RF was mush and it just went downhill fast from there. Even at my fastest, I was a couple tenths off the pace. Still trying to get my timing down.

I've also logged probably thousands of laps at Bristol over the years. My first NASCAR sim was NASCAR Racing 2, and I'd play it offline against the AI...Bristol was the only track I'd run full length races at just because it was so fun.

Also, using that "qualifying" setup for the race will work just long enough to make it through those 15 lap sprints they were doing, even pushing hard. Once you hit a lap or two beyond that, you're in trouble.

I came across a group tonight that was running a fixed setup 200 lap race at Bristol. So, I went for it.

My car got almost totally demolished in a huge impact about 20 laps in. Someone spun and was up against the outside wall exiting turn four. I went low, but as I was coming through he gunned it and shot across the track. I slammed hard into him with the right front, got some air, slammed into the inside wall, and generally had damage all around.

It cost me 76 seconds worth of repair in the pits, enough to put me a lap down under the yellow. But, I stuck with it - got the free pass a couple of times during the race to keep me on the lead lap.

The car wasn't nearly as fast after the impact, so I just kept an eye on my tires (pushing to the maximum at Bristol burns up the tires; after 20-25 laps they get so hot they lose all grip).

As the other guys started slipping, sliding, and spinning because of how hard they abused the tires, I just motored along and wound up with a solid 2nd place finish...one of only two cars on the lead lap.
