Gents, I had to reinstall FSX after getting several error messages, I removed everything through add/remove progs and the search function. I have re-installed but now whenever I switch view to externals and switch back to cockpit view I get lock-ups, any ideas please.
Kristorf - if you're running an nVidia card, you might want to check your anti-aliasing settings. I was having similar problems to yours and found that I had AA set "on" in both the nVidia control panel and in FSX itself. The sim didn't seem to like this. When I de-selected AA in the FSX settings area, the problem went away. Might be worth a try.
