I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on the cause of a problem I am having with a motherboard. It started one day when I was using the system and it just shut down, as if some pulled the cord. So I did the usual, check for viruses, reinstalled the OS, etc. It still would ramdomly happen. I then purchased a new case thinking it was a power supply problem, same behavior. I have at this point replaced the CMOS battery, removed the memory and replaced with some spare I had lying around, used a spare harddrive, video card, etc. So the only original pieces are the motherboard and the CPU (which I removed and reseated). I still have the random power failures, is this motherboard ready for the garbage bin?

Thanks,
riccisj

Canada, eh!
That'd be my guess.

Possibly the motherboard. Still could be the PSU. PSU's that come with cases usually aren't very good unless you are getting an Antec case (or someone else known for the PSU's.)

Do you have a UPS? You could be getting some sort of fluctuations in your line power. Seems unlikely since you would probably have noticed your room light flicker or dim. If you have an old UPS it might not be able to handle the load. I've had this happen to me.

Thanks for the response. I don't think it is a PSU issue as the case I tested in at the time has been running a new AMD system with no problems. As for heat, sometimes the failure would happen in the middle of boot after the system had not been run for 24 hours. I think I'll look for a cheap or used P3 board and take a chance that I can reuse the processor.

Thanks Again,
riccisj

Looks similar to the problems I've had with my Soyo board. It was very unstable when I bought it as if the memory was bad. The memory and other components checked out fine in another PC with the same mb. I finally sent the board back to Soyo and they confirmed that it had a bad capacitor. They fixed it and it ran fine for several months. Just this week the problem began again when I tried to add a third stick of memory. Now I can only run it with one stick of memory and at fail safe defaults. Again, the memory tests fine in another PC with the same board.
So, it's looking like it's time for a new board for me, too.

The problem is with hardware so cheap fixing this board would probably be more expensive then buying new. This board was actually an ASUS from an off-the-shelf HP system. Of course it is out of warranty now so HP gives you a local number to call to be raked over the coals.

Does anyone have any preference for where they buy online? I was thinking about NewEgg.com.

Thanks,
riccisj

I've always been pleased with the service I get with Newegg.

NewEgg, Mwave, and Googlegear are some of the big names I've used. I've not had any trouble with them (only used Googlegear once for a processor, but I've used the other two several times.) You can see what people think of vendors by checking http://www.resellerratings.com I always check there before trying a new vendor.
