Further to my previous post, and thanks for the responses, I have uninstalled and restored my computer and then re-installed, and still get the same error message. I get the UBISOFT intro then 'Silent Hunter 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close'. I have tried changing graphics settings, installing on different drive but nothing works. Has anyone got any idea what may be causing this? This is the only game I have ever brought that will not run at all.

Ok, it might be the intro movies that are messing you up. Go into SilentHunterIII\data\Movies\Intro and remove both files that are there and try it. BTW doing a system restore might not remove any entries made to the registry by SHIII, you really need to clean the registry with a registry cleaner. I use a free program called TweekNow RegCleaner.

Thanks HW3. I'll try the movie tip. I take your point about the registry entries, but I thought I would try the restore option first. I do feel that this is something fairly basic. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks HW3! It was indeed the intro movies. I removed the 2 files and now the game runs fine. Looks like I am in for a real sim treat too, so many thanks for your help. Now, back to the Naval Academy...

I'm guessing you know what to do... If you don't, 'this' routine has always worked for me, and doesn't cost me a penny to pass along.

Start > Run ..type in 'regedit'.

The lines of interest are HKEY Current User and HKEY Local Machine.

Click the little 'plus' signs and go for SOFTWARE, then UBISOFT.

Delete the whole UBISOFT folder from each and I'm betting you can re-install no problem.

If you DO have trouble...I'm too far away to smack in the mouth !!!

I've had 'hang on' install parts in a few games, that caused me to not be able to re-install them. This little dance did the trick then...
