Hi,

I'm new to SH3 (but not SH2 or Destroyer Command), but if you are on the way out to start a mission, I'd dive and quietly pass them by. Unless you can be certain of a kill, it isn't a good idea to engage them, or to even become detected by them.

I've not played the single mission, but I've run Gibraltar both ways lots of times in the campaign. Easiest way to do it in the sim is go deep, silent and slow. Dive to 200 meters, silent running, ahead slow, and you're through in 6-12 hours depending on how close to the strait you dive.

No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

I have done the single mission, & it is a b! Though if you can pull it off, you can win big.

First off, no offense to the above posters but in the real sub world diving deep is a sure way to get killed, plus a WWII submarine could not get out of the Mediterranean because the submerged current was greater than 7 knots which was more than the subs could go submerged.

So if you want a little reality when doing that mission remember these facts.

1. Sonar does not work against surface ships.
2. You can operate your diesels with decks awash.
3. Destroyers are deaf at greater than 20 knots with a linear drop in hearing between 10, & 20.
4. They are also deaf when you are behind them.
5. Surface spot lights reflect off of night time water. Translated they cant see you underwater at night.
6. Your torpedoes need 300 meters to arm.
7. Your hydrophone operator can detect fast boats on attack runs.
8. High power centimeter radar had not yet been implemented at that time. They can see your full sub outline but not your periscope.
9. The African side is your side.

Good Luck, & something to shoot for. I got through on the first attempt getting into Spezia with sinking 9 ships. Thats nine grasshopper.

Let me know if you can beat that, & I wont believe you.

The helicopter doesnt mean anything, I just liked the graphics.

Hi Manock,

Thanks for the RW insight! \:\) Just out of interest, is (any?) current/drift modelled in SH3??

No current modelled in SH3.

Great post Manock. I really love it when a fellow sim teaches me something.

As far as I know there are two currents through the street of Gibraltar: "Fresh" (i.e. containing less salt) water flows into the Mediterranean as a surface current - this replaces the water that evaporated faster in the Med than in the Atlantic.
Heavier water containing more salt flows back into the Atlantic in the lower parts of the street.
The "border" between those two layers is (if I remember correctly) at around 200m depth.

On top of those "constant" currents you get the tidal currents. Thus I wouldn't be too sure about those 7 knots.

Regards,
Puck

Don't forget guys, none of the u-boats got out again, and I doubt it had anything to do with the currents anyway. ;\)
