I have RB3D/HASP. No problem with it so far, but it seems like either I'm a very poor marksman or it takes ALOT of lead to bring down an opponent. I'm a veteran of thousands of dogfights on other sims so I'm a bit puzzled. I also know that WWI aircraft lacked armor and could be brought down with one or two lucky shots. Is it me or am I "missing" something else?

Thanks,

Jim

Yeah, the "increase bullet mass" thing works a treat, only a modest adjustment makes a significant difference.

I'm back to playing with the stock setup, though. It is indeed extremely frustrating to blast away and get no results (just as the low-power FM, with mostly poor rudder authority and a climb rate that wouldn't pull the skin off custard, is also very frustrating).

But it's probably not unrealistic. I've just read again AG Lee's classic "No Parachute" and it abounds with accounts of his rounds apparently going right into the fuselage of this or that Albatros right behind te pilot etc and having no effect, to the point Lee records, only half in jest perhaps, that they must be made of iron. Admittedly that was mostly in a Pup with a single pop-pop-pop gun but even so, as in real life so in RB, getting close and aiming for pilot and engine from just off the EA's six seems to be best.

And I have got those "lucky shots" sometimes, RB seems to model a variety of those, including pilot kill with the plane pitching up and falling away like a dead leaf or sometimes spinning in a more conventional manner.

But a WW1 sim in which you have to work really hard for every kill is probably spot on. Take MvR, a crack shot but in many of his engagements he fired several hundred rounds to get a kill. For example, his combat report for his 15th kill on 27 Dec 1916, reports he took 300 rounds to get the kill (and even then, it seems the "Vickers 2 seater" he shot down was probably McCudden in a DH2, who feigned a loss of control to escape after his gun jammed, but recovered after MvR had broken off).

When you soar into the air in a Sopwith scout
And you're scrapping with a Hun and your gun cuts out
Well, you stuff down your nose till your plugs fall out
'Cos you haven't got a hope in the morning!

The ammunition type used at that time was completely unsuited for the purpose. They made small clean holes without pulling material with the shot, doing little area damage. The top wing is the best target to slow down the opponent and make him a sitting duck. My technique in fighting scouts is, if possible, to climb straight away after a pass to gain distance and altitude,invert-reverse and come at him head on from above to get the top wing and engine area. Repeat. This works very well!
When following recons, and they're turning to put their gunner's rounds on you, a little up and down with the elevators will keep most of the shots from hitting you. Hitting them when they're in this turned position is better for getting to his engine.

Agreed, Skid! This is about what I do. Don't follow him down and give up your altitude. I aim at disabling all possible opponents. If an EA is out of the fight, I turn my attention to the next opponent. If I have damaged the landing gear of an EA and it runs, I let it go. It will crash and count as a kill.

One of the threads mentioned how much easier it is to damage planes in the stock game. I recently did an install of RBII, and this is true. I was amazed to see an EA's wings crumple before my eyes with just a couple of bursts.
