Ok, so I figured out how to lock a ship, find it's distance, and its angle on the bow, but for whatever reason I only acquired a ship's speed once. I'm viewing from the periscope BTW.

What exactly do I click (besides the stop watch on the notepad) and how does it relate to my periscope orientation? Do I place the periscope centerline on the bow of the ship, click the stopwatch and let it run for at least ten seconds, place the centerline on the bow again and stop the watch? I'm not sure what I did when I got it to work. Could there be a bug, or does speed aquisition always work for you guys?

Any help is appreciated.

Fritz

Good news first. Currently all ships travel at 9 knots. I will repeat that, all ships, escorts not 100% sure. The only exception I have found was a slow convoy at around 5-6 knots.

The Manual TDC is poorly implimented. The notepad part is good except for the speed component. Also you have to remember to click the 'tick' to OK what you are doing then click the 'tick' to update the TDC solution.

It is stupid to keep loosing the speed or having to re-do it for every new target in a convoy or when reaquiring the target after raising the scope.

Now the dials to ovecome this short coming are in the TDC screen F6, now this is a pain having to go between the periscope and the F6. These should all be at the attack scope.

I set the TDC in the F6 screen to manual input and assign the speed, set the torpedo depth and spread etc. Now you can use the notepad to update the relative bearing and the AOB.

Now hopefully the request by Neal & my list will supply us with the tools to do proper plotting and thus work out the targets speed via the F5 map.

Hmmm, I find that ships all travel at different speeds, though the same type of ships will usually all run the same speed.

Ran into a lone coastal merchant doing 7 knots, not 9.

Go to your nav map and mark the ship's position. Follow it for 10 minutes, mark it's position again. Use the ruler to find the distance between the two. Multiply your findings by 6 and convert your KPH to Knots(everyone should have this chart handy).

It's a bit too lengthy when you're on your attack run, though. It's rather useful for gauging speed while stalking or hydrophoning.

"Currently all ships travel at 9 knots."

Not in my game. I've regularly seen 4,5,6,7....besides many more. I'm talking about convoys here.

These are not my numbers. I don't play on 100% difficulty, so these are the speeds my crew are giving me.

I'm having a similar prob to mrfritz - can't seem to get speed, not sure what to do!

In SH1+2 I would "periscope measure" the ship itself: start at the bow and time how long until the stern passed by - essentially, how long does it take the target to move it's own distance...if you know the target length you can calc: cargo ship that is 163m long and takes 60 secs to travel it's own length is going 9,780m/hr, or 5.35 kts (1kt = 2,000 yards or 1,828m). Only works perpendicular to target (or close to perp).

Anyway, just where do you put the scope in SH3 and how come I never get a solution?
