Did the Camel have a throttle? Or the Pup or Tripe for that matter? I remember reading a long time ago that they could only 'blip' the engine on and off during a landing to control speed...is that true? I also remember reading that the le Rhone enginded Camels had a throttle, but not the Clergets...

Or am I going nuts?

I believe you are correct. I remember reading about this somewhere (perhaps in Billiy Bishop's book, but I'm not sure).

From what I remember reading, most rotary-engined planes did not have a throttle, only an On/Off switch.

Probably made maneuvering, diving and landing quite tricky.

I believe that the camel had a very primative form of throttle.I can't remember exactly what it was.But I believe it involved cutting out a cylinder or 2,thus giving the camel Jock a few more options other than just blipping the engine on and off.I might be wrong about the method but it definately had some form of throttling.

I have seen a show that featured restored and replica pre-WW1 planes as well as a retored Camel and a Dr1.

The Camel Pilot explained and showed the switch that choose between 3 different power settings based on how many cylinders he could have firing. He still used his blip button, though.
