hi
i am ust wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any flight sims new or old where you can pilot a german bomber during the blitz - ie at night, - i just find this an interesting and harrowing part of the battle of britain - i have played things like Their Finest Hour, Rowan's BoB and European Air War in the past but i dont recall ever an nighttime bombing raids.

There seem to be a few single missions available for different flavours of Il-2 '46, like this one for the VP Modpack (link under 'MORE'):

...and this one for HSFX:

You can turn the tables in this campaign, which worked in the CUP mod...

thanks, that IL2 1946 one looks impressive, - i got interested after reading also a bit on that Knickelbein system when reading the TFH manual by which the bombers used to navigate in teh dark for a while and whether any game ever tried to feature that

I see the Heinkel campaign in this Desastersoft add-on for Cliffs of Dover featured some simlulated Knickebein missions:

May not work with the current Team Fusion current release, although there is a compatibility fix for release 4.5 at ATAG, here

...much as I did myself with Clod, not that long back. Even in its 'Blitz Edition', as a single player experience, CloD IMHO doesn't come close to Bob2 as a sim of 'the Battle'. 'A' for effort, but there's still too much basic stuff that's broken or badly-implemented. But it has some nice points. One of which ISN'T its stock RAF campaign with its inane backstory - suggest you replace it from the get-go with the 'redux' modified version available on ATAG via the links available here: https://codredux.weebly.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html But I digress...

I've tried several times to get into a bomber campaign but could never stick with it, especially night missions. I did try, honest...

...but hated staring at the blackness and long transit flights. Even from a night-fighter, when the transit flights are short.

Too lazy I guess, and set in my ways to boot - I just prefer shooting them down, and in daylight when I can see them, and the results...

Anyway good luck with 'the battle of the beams'!

Radio navigation in CloD is like the rest - and unfinished, untested (before release) feature, NDB work OK, but Lorenz (for night landing, as in above 1946 video) is mostly broken, very narrow signal bean, lack of Morse code and audible warnings.

But now this is just curiosity, Desastersoft seems out of business.

ATAG is just a forum used by Team Fusion Simulations (TFS) - now official CloD developers for 1C (working independently) , making fixes for Channel map and working in a new map: North Africa 1941-42 around Tobruk (a payware DLC to be released probable next year).

By install from STEAM library IL-2:Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover BLITZ you have the lasted updates.

Don't help much that CloD bugs list is bigger than TFS efforts. frown

oh this all sounds confusing - i guess i will jsut get the redux then and that comes with the said bombing missions? i would have hoped that Cliffs of Dover would be one of the better ones out there, having seen some vids on its Stuka being played in squadrons and such

do you have any experience with Wings over the Reich?

No the night bombing missions come with the Desastersoft payware add-on (designed for pre-Blitz editions of CloD, but may work with Blitz too, don't know for sure). The RAF Redux (hate that word!) campaign replaces the p*ss-poor mission briefings in the stock RAF campaign, flying Hurricanes then Spits, while fixing some of the missions' problems, and making it into an approximation of the career during the Battle of US RAF pilot 'Red' McColpin - I posted a couple of mission reports/AARs on it here, starting with this one: http://SimHQ.com/forum/ubbthreads.p...tz-spitfire-girl-here-i-come#Post4472303

CloD could be amazing, and possibly is for multi-player, but for single-player, as Sokol said, it still has a LOT of problems, even after Team Fusion worked their magic. Despite some very nice features like dynamic shadows, sound effects and very good cockpits, I found it much inferior to the classic 'Battle of Britain II - Wings of Victory'.

https://combatace.com/forums/topic/92980-battle-of-the-battle-of-britain-sims/

Perhaps having been spoiled by BoB2 as such a great sim of 'the Battle', I haven't yet been persuaded to invest in 'Wings over the Reich', so will let others who have, come back on that. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has written a full, objective review of it, yet.

PS back to CloD, as it happens 'that thing' in the low-level recce mission described in the AAR MIGHT have been intended to represent a Knickebein transmitter, it's not very clear from the screenshot...

Simulate a "Knickebein"* operation in CloD seems not possible - because is need detect two different radio beacon crossing over the target area.

I guess that RL Luftwaffe pathfinder bombers used in this night attacks have two AFN-2 installed, each tuned in different antenna.

In CloD are only one AFN-2 in planes that are equipped with this device, and this work bad, due lack of Morse code informing deviations.

* What Desastersoft KG-53 mini campaign did was use scripts for compensate the lack of Morse code in CloD, this script inform inf plane deviate a given distance of beacon signal (the flight route) and over the target an script inform pilot for drop bombs.

In Il-2:46 Team Daidalos implement radio navigation so well, a shame that CloD are not even able to replicate this.

In Il-2 Battle of Stalingrad they dumb down the radio navigation - supposedly for be friendly for "new players, making the beacon antenna being just a "magnet", that attract plane detector needle from any direction.

In fact bomber have one receiver tuned to a given frequency, and two distant antennas transmit in the same frequency a Morse Code, one a dot, the other a dash.

Bomber follow one of this signal bean, with bombardier hearing a continuous dot or dash, since the two signal are pointed for cross over target area, there he became hear both signals, a .-.-.-.- and drop bombs.

CloD have nothing of Morse Code sound...

Agathgosdaimon

If you have CloD installed, try this mission, with some workaround seems feasible night area bombing.
