I am in Rochefort, looking at the EAW ETO map for targets to actually visit. Surely the one named "La Pallice" is actually La Rochelle which we visited last week.

Is La Rochelle where the U Boat pens in Das Boot was set?

Jel, if I may intrude for a moment.

Check your PM's.

OK, enjoy your vacation.

Didn't get the usual e-mail notice.

I'll check it out.

Checking further, now that I am in a place with a decent internet connection, it seems that "La Pallice" is the name of the deep water port for La Rochelle. However, its name does not appear on our road map, hence my inference that there is an error in the name.

Moggy- La Pallice was certainly used in "Das Boot", but I suspect that St Nazaire was the main U-boat base. We hope to be heading there next weekend smile

So we have been out and seen St Nazaire and Vannes today. We are staying overnight in Carnac which is not far from Lorient where we will be heading tomorrow smile

Although much has changed since WW2 it is marvellous to be able to visit these places which previously were just names on the EAW maps wink

The final lap in Brittany took in two more targets yesterday. Rennes is the capital of Brittany, so we just had to sample their gallettes and cider

[Linked Image]

The galette is made from buck wheat flour, and was topped with lots of goodies, including coquilles St. Jacques (scallops) and it is traditional to drink cider from a cup

Heading back to Rochefort we went through Nantes wink

Nothing like actually walking the ground you’ve read about. Sometimes it is just as you thought, and sometimes it isn’t. Gettysburg is as you would imagine. Antietam is not what I pictured. The ground is more convoluted, rolling, and less defined than I thought. Been there a couple times and still can’t figure out what Lee thought in choosing to stand there.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

On the map I posted the most southerly place in Quiberon. We went there especially in memory of my late brother Bill. In April '45 there was a hydraulic failure on their Avenger probably due to damage from Jap flak. They only got one wheel down, and in the rough landing he got a depressed skull fracture. He was evacuated to Sydney on HMAS Quiberon. He told me that he was disappointed some time later when he missed out on an opportunity to purchase the ship's bell frown

Wow. Interesting and sobering. We have very little in Australia in the way of that type of history that America or Europe has. The closest i got as a kid was when we used to explore the bunkers, tunnels and gun emplacements scattered around Darwins beaches and East Point.
