I'm taking a somewhat different approach now that I've had time to figure out some things. The results is that I now have a perfectly rendering multi-part carrier.

Note that I combined the three hull sections into one and deleted the lower deck TMOD completely. There were simply too many little R/S issues to overcome with the original model set. I've lost a little bit of detail but hardly noticeable.

The sequence in the tardata file is:

1 - Low tower
2 - Mid tower
3 - High tower
4 - Flight deck
5 - Hull

I've also removed the gun turrets from the low tower, to be replaced with the targetable ones that I already have on the existing carriers.

I finished mapping a number of elements which were still set to 0,0.

Finally, I added bow waves and a wake graphic to the hull section.

Of course, this will be only for my static ship fleets, not for the MGO's since I've removed the guns and we decided that adding the gun TMODs to the MGO's would be too difficult.

I will probably have to move the add-on gun turrets a bit since it looks like they are situated in a different location on the Island structure.

Then I still have to look at the Hornet and the Yorktown models before editing the target set to use the new models.

In any case, this is a very nice upgrade from the old one piece models. Credit goes to Moggy for taking the time to put these models together.

PS - I might take a shot at re-sequencing the deck cargo/ freighter R/S issues too since it's obvious that this is important when setting up stacked TMODs.

Oh and I forgot to mention.

Now that I have the multi-set working I must set all the sections to ground level and then raise them with the TMOD editor rather than the 3dz editor. Otherwise the hit bubbles will be off.

It might screw up the R/S so we'll see how it goes.

Also, if you want to use the 8 piece carrier in one of your MGO sets let me know. I can add a wake element to the lower hull for you, just so we have some visual continuity.

Heh, well, we've come long way since the Victorious, with something like 70 piggybacks on one element!

An impressive record to be sure.

I think you'll be very happy with these models once I add the gun turrets and deck planes.

Moggy...

Does this success mean Midway may be back on track?

Maybe?

Eventually...
