Everest climber: "We had to step over lifeless bodies"

Almost at the top of Mt Everest (29, 029 ft) lines of climbers waiting to reach the very top. Some may have died waiting in the long line but most have died on the descent either from falling or perhaps having spent too much time in the "death zone" (begins at about 26, 247 ft.) due to the long waiting line of climbers. In the death zone most climbers need bottled oxygen to survive. 16-20 hrs is about the max time a climber should spend in the death zone.

11 climbers have died this year in their attempt to climb it and come back down alive. Since humans first began to climb Mt Everest the 1850's over 200 climbers have lost their lives. The bodies of more than just a few may never be found as they are under the glacier/ice.

Geez, even the top of a mountain in a secluded part of the world has long waiting lines.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
From what I read: Basically these days you pay an exorbitant amount of money (50K) and then you get dragged up there by the Sherpas, everything tended and provided for you. It's a very expensive and slightly more deadly selfie-location for the rich.

I've noticed there's a fair number of Everest climbers who are in their 60's. Guessing not only because they've reached a point in their lives when they can afford it but also some may feel they've already lived a full life and have less to lose should they become another Everest statistic.

It doesn't surprise me about the 50k fee. Nepal is a third world country after all and I'm sure 50k EURO or 50k USD in Nepal goes a VERY long way!

So yes, it's basically a rich tourist trap as RSColonel pointed out.

Having lived at sea level for almost my entire life I can guarantee that I would pass out at the green 1500-3000 meter range. So......Everest is out of the question for me. smile

50K is a lot of money. The prices in the gift shop must be ridiculous. biggrin

screwy

Well, perhaps that well circulated picture will serve to reduce the crowding next season...

(Probably not)

Looks like it may be time to increase the charge to something notably higher than $50K.

Looks like a good place to put a Starbucks. Maybe there already is one.

I'll stick with the occasional lazy Stone Mountain afternoon 'climb' with convenient hand rails and painted stripe to follow.

I went once with a very out-of-shape cousin who made it to the flag poles and wondered how much further we had to go. "Uh, this is the entrance. We haven't actually started yet." biggrin

It became difficult for me too as I let myself go over the years. I bet I could do it today without breaking a sweat or even spilling my beer.

I'm anemic even on a good day, so I'm sure I wouldn't make it half a mile up. LOL
I can only imagine that after all of that work to get there, finding a Disney World type line to get to the top would be soul crushing enough.
They do need to have some requirements for experience to be allowed though, it isn't only the inexperienced that pay the price.

Mt. Everest is going to need FastPass.

3000 meters is pretty basic, PM. The thinness of the atmosphere at that altitude alone would not incapacitate a reasonably healthy person, i.e. anyone without a heart condition or some pre-existing breathing problem like COPD or asthma or emphysema. On the other hand, if you add much in the way of physical exertion to the mix, yeah it could get to you pretty quickly.

SALUTE TO ALL!

I've climbed up to 3,800 meters without any ill effects ... but then again, I was 25 years younger. Was a great trip that I shall remember for the rest of my life. Can't say that I feel no desire to climb higher but at the same time I know that those 25 years didn't pass without effect, and I'm not just referring to the 25 kilograms of extra weight that I put on in those years. They definitely are one among several contributing factors. So, I've shifted my ambitions to other areas.

nah mate, i live in sea level too and rio de janeiro is full of mountains and sierras, petropolis is a tourist location ranging from 1200m to 1900m we did lots of trips as kids there in school bus. as you are going up the hill you can feel your eardrums buzzing, but that is all. green line is green for a reason. having trained at 2200m at agulha negras peak(1900ish to 2700cume), i can tell your its a fu--king difference, the cold at night where they left us to survive is piercing.

Like so many things; when it becomes popular it is ruined.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.
