Ended up being a big week. Father in law in hospital for open heart surgery, the ex that i care for off to mental health and then a respite centre for 5 days so we can all get a break, eldest daughter thinking about moving out with a bunch of no job possible no hoper types..all rather draining. Capped it off sitting in the cinema last night with the other two kids for three hours watching end game and eating popcorn and maccas biggrin

In between all of that i slowly tried to ruin my model, more of that in a sec. First off, nearly finished the planking. The middle section was an average fit beam wise, it was simply too wide so it needed a slice and a few planks removed. It also doesn't take into account the plane ramps or life boat mounts so needed extra holes cut and pieces removed. In the end it worked out fine.

Sitting down lightly to get the sides flushed in, i couldn't work from the middle with this piece as i had with the others as it needed to butt up nicely against the railings and fit into the curves sweetly.

[Linked Image]

Ramp sections cut out and sliced a couple of planks out of the middle for a flush fit.

[Linked Image]

Those six life boat mounts were not pre cut which was weird, the last plane ramp being sliced out.

[Linked Image]

Trial fit of the deck. I'll need to buy some plastic clamps to put some pressure on the hull when i glue these all in as the fit is close but still gappy in places.

[Linked Image]

Dual four inch guns assembly.

[Linked Image]

Now. Weathering the hull. I started out by giving it all a semi dark wash over a dried semi gloss. It was either i keep the hull and everything else clean, or add some rust and grime, i liked the clean look but really wanted some rust and streaks..so away i went. Panic set in as the wash i had applied wasn't coming off as easily as i thought it would and i could see the lighter shade really starting to discolour more than i wanted. So then you get a guy bolting from the shed to the bathroom in the middle of the night, brushes and ship hull in hand. I spent a few minutes running water over the hull and basically scrubbing at it with one of my softer larger brushes. Crisis averted, well, besides overworking the original paint a little bit. The next little while was poking around with a rust wash and trying to build up thin layers without over doing it. Ha! Me, overdo it, yeah right. I called it quits after a couple of hours and then it sat for a few days like this.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

The next assault was to try and work the rust into something better as i didn't like what i had at the moment. The front end of the lower hull got a respray, the front section of the boot line got a respray..at one stage the whole ship was close to getting a respray but i decided to work with the mess i had created as the lesser of two jobs. The pictures don't do it justice (really!) and after playing around with the rust more, using the lighter and medium greys to do some streaking and reclearing the complete hull...i'm a lot happier than i was initially. I did a trial fit of most of the upper section and once it all comes together i think she will be in a good place. The anchor stains may be a bit over done..but, at the normal viewing distance of say an arms width it looks surprisingly ok. Don't hold back if you dislike it, i have hugely thick skin so throw it at me biggrin All criticism is welcome.

Lower front respray.

Looks great, but I'll agree with you that the hawsepipe rust is a bit heavy.

The rust is spot on IMO. having spent almost 20 years of my life dealing with steel vessels and rust I feel semi-qualified to comment on it.

Once steel starts oxidizing, it's tough to stop. A full on hang over the side and chip, de-rust, prime and paint becomes pretty dumb in wartime, no doubt done but still dumb in most cases. Painting over covers it for a VERY short time. Lot's of dock/drydock and sandblasting, coating, priming and painting does the trick. As far as the anchor hawsepipes, probably a lost cause once the anchor is used.

Looks great, again IMO.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I would only say that I think the anchor stains should probably be vertical and not raked to the rear. Just a nitpick really...great job.

Don't say that Max! I just finished reworking the stains and nearly went vertical and then left them angled. I think if i rework that area any more the front will fall off Due to plastic stress lol.

[Linked Image]

In between spending far too much time on the front, which needed another repaint as well as the stain rework, i have managed to sneak some other stuff in as well. Turrets, bridge and other parts and started on the barrel bags and hull mounted secondaries.

Thanks for all the words guys, i was happy with the rust as it was but also felt like it was a bit much at the same time and it nagged at me until i just had to do something. Cheers all!

Loose fit up of the hangar and bridge. There is still so many items to paint and be added to these two structures, it's a bit daunting when i look over at the still more than half full sprues! She's getting there though.

The jerries need to go on the rear shelf on my Sherman, i keep them close by in hopes i may actually put them on one day.

Rain, rain and more rain. My painting shed has been at near 80% humidity for a couple of weeks now and cold af during the night so modelling was put on hold. Back at it again trying to knock off the Bridge and associated bits, so much small stuff!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I went with Tamiya smoke for the bridge windows and searchlights, it may not be legit by i like the effect, it gives off a semi see through shine which gives it a bit of depth. The top section is glued and still needs another six tiny fittings to be fitted to the very top deck piece. The very bottom unglued section still needs the AA guns fitted and life rafts. All of it needs to be lightly weathered so i am going to try my hand at some oils.

Cheers Nixer! I just worked out that the AA pieces are stupidly overscaled for the tubs for they are meant to sit in. I'll post a pic tomorrow (just got home from some late night John Wick III gratuitous violence) to show you how silly they look. I need to come up with a workaround without shelling out for another PE kit. Happy sails man.

edit- lol, just realised my reflection is in the iwata brush, what a noob biggrin

Additional edit, does anyone have any idea what these items are? they have me puzzled. The first four, two sets of two, look like old school radiators.

[Linked Image]

The next part, one on each side, looks like a big round dust bin. Rad looking items also shown.

Could they be racks for the signal flags? One is visible here...
https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205152523

Seems to be. The drums are some sort of director, but I can't identify them. There is a broad similarity to the original 6" battery director of the first world war, and not present on the fully modernised QE and KGV/Rodney et al, though there are shared Directors for (WW2) other battery types. (Tentative only - I have nothing very in depth for WW2 battleships, and not even that much for the WW1 stuff).

The radiator looking items I believe are floater net baskets, if the ship goes down the nets should automatically float free and offer some floatation aide to the crewmen.

Yes. 6" directors.
Quote
The 6" director towers were relocated port and starboard on the new bridge tower below and abeam the 15" director. 4" HA directors located at rear of bridge tower below and abaft the 15" director.

Yes signal flag lockers.

The other, drum like object, according my Anatomy book are 6" control towers. The other higher placed object is the 4" HA control tower.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
