I've read and reread the manual and watched training videos, but no matter what I do I can't seem to keep stable control of my Harrier below 100 in knots -- the rocking starts, the machine seems to drop too fast, etc. At 60 knots and below, forget it. Crash city. How the heck do you keep a steady flight orientation as you enter such slow speeds? Is there some stabilizing system I'm forgetting to turn on?

Hi mate,

I don't seem to have that problem, I use Warthog stick.

Several solutions could be:
1. Trim, make sure your trim is good.
2. Joystick axes curves - I have mine set as per page 6 of Chucks Guide.
3. STOL flaps - make sure they are down.
4. Ensure nozzles are at hover stop - 82 degrees for hover.
5. Are you too heavy to hover? Check VREST page on you MFD - click on VL (vertical landing) - there you will see F+W - that is the maximum weight of fuel and water you can have onboard with your current loadout to complete a vertical landing. Dump fuel as needed (set your bingo to the fuel weight you want then hit the left and right dump switches, then they will automatically stop dumping when the fuel weight hits what you have set on the bingo switch).
6. You need to land into the wind - normally the LHA should be steaming over 10 kts so it shouldn't be a problem for seaborne, but may be over land.
7. Ensure your HUD is in VSTOL mode, and monitor your power, AOA, vertical speed etc.

Hope this helps, let me know how you go.

Chuck's guide can be found here:

Beware Chuck's guide is very good but not everything is correct (eg anti-skid should not be on for conventional, short or rolling takeoffs - see NATOPS)

I have a question....

They say flying is like riding a bike, "you never forget how to ride a bike"

why so is it that in this video (and all ED endorsed F-18 'real pilot' video's) do actual pilots forget where the switches are??

What is funny in the video I linked here is that the 'arm chair' pilots are telling the 'real aviator' how to fly the aircraft.

Perhaps the armchair pilots need to just take a breather. Lex, C.W Lemoine, A.E.W etc all have had issues remembering the functions, switches etc of aircraft.

it's like the movie "Sully" where the 'pilots' all manage to make the airfield, (takes 20 odd goes) they all get there. Practice over and over and over, all the 'pilots' endorsed by ED or not haven't flown the aircraft in a decade or so..
They all state that in their uploads.

old mate harrier pilot is introduced as flying back in 2002. near on 20 years ago. Arm chair pilots just need to stop having input as they were never endorsed or have living proof of landing on carriers or being certified on aircraft in DCS.

It’s an eccentric aircraft which explains both its appeal and its high frustration rates. Difficult to master, at least for me. But I’m sticking with it because it’s so interesting and quirky. And I hate losing to a #%&*$# piece of software.

I agree. I enjoy a challenge and this aircraft is proving just that.

Yeah, it's pretty cool even in the unfinished state. I really like it. LHA takeoffs and landings make it interesting, as well as FARPs. Lots of variety in ordnance, air refueling etc... NVGs, NAVFLIR, TPOD, DMT etc...
