Anyone know of a source to find decently sized models(wingspans 1 1/2 foot or more) around? We have a baby boy on the way and I'm thinking of going with an aviation theme in the nursery. I'd like to hang large planes from the ceiling but so far (my search is just beginning) I've only found desktop/shelf sized prebuilts so far. Anything larger were model kits and as much as I'd love to build some nice models i don't have the time, skills or supplies. I don't really care what the material so long as they look decent.

Thinking of a WWII theme but haven't ruled out modern jet A/C. Would appreciate any ideas or advice anyone has to share!

I've got a bad feeling about this.....

The only ones I can think of are like the wooden ones, that are not often as large as you're looking for, and are crazy expensive. And if someone were to sell a model they built, like on ebay, they usually ask for a ton of money as well.

The kid won't notice if they are descent or not.

I would suggest a mobile with smaller foam profile a/c.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Not quite what you described that you are looking for... But if you're not too hung up on replicas...

Little ones (lots of them!)

A 3 pack of larger ones

Heck, you'll even have some to play with while you're waiting for him to get old enough to start complaining about you hogging his toys! wink

If you want them that big they are pretty pricey, my friend has these 1/72 scale hanging in his kids room.

That big grab bag looks like just the ticket for a colorful mobile for a young child.

Movement+color equals happy kid...I think.

That's basically what I was thinking... that, plus the safety aspect of small, light weight things falling from the ceiling (or mobile) vs large, not-so-light things falling into a crib.

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
Some one gave the marketing director of ADT a model Spitfire that had a line to hang it from the ceiling and a motor in it so that when it was switched by a remote control it flew in circles. Of course he had it installed in his office ad he played with it a lot.

He was the guy that used to give me VIP tickets to the airshows, and when we were both in the office the discussions usually ended up about aircraft smile

He was the one that used to book the C47 to fly to airshows

He is the one I miss most from work, we got on great both at work and outside it, he was getting near retirement age when I left ADT, and it has been about 20 years since I last seen him.

Thanks for suggestions guys. When my daughter was born we went with classic Alice In Wonderland illustrations painted on the wall by my awesome sister in law. We just want to have something equally awesome for the little guy when he gets here. Trying to figure out if an A/C theme is possible.

I believe some of those are stolen intellectual property from Fiddler's Green http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/ They can be purchased cheaply at Fiddler's Green and reproduced as many times as desired for yourself.

Thanks for the extra ideas, the paper models does seem interesting. Assembling isn't so much an issue as is the all the paint and fine detail work that goes into a typical model kit. Being able to just print and assemble sound like a really neat way of modeling.
