Haven't found an obituary yet, but heard from a reliable source

Update:

A legend passes: Dick Cole, last of the Doolittle Raiders, dies at 103

Retired Lt. Col. Dick Cole, the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders who rallied the nation’s spirit during the darkest days of World War II, has passed away.

Tom Casey, president of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Association, confirmed to Air Force Times that Cole died Tuesday morning in San Antonio. His daughter, Cindy Cole Chal, and son, Richard Cole, were by his side, Casey said.

Cole will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Casey said. Memorial services are also being scheduled at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas.

Cole, who was then-Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle’s co-pilot in the No. 1 bomber during the daring 1942 raid to strike Japan, was 103.

RIP

103 is a fantastic run to say the least.

Got the honor of meeting him a couple of years ago at Planes of Fame. I was one of the last volunteers to leave and right before he left he gave about thirty of us who were still there at the end of the night Doolittle challenge coins.

RIP

Friends: I was saddened yesterday to learn of the passing of my friend Lt. Col. Dick Cole. Dick and I grew up in Dayton, Ohio in the 1920's and 30's. He lived on the West side and I on the North. As many youngsters were at that time, we were both influenced by Dayton's aviation heritage. I have a clear memory of the morale boost given to the American people by the "Doolittle Raid" in April of 1942. All of those fellows were heroes to us at a time when we needed some. Dick went on to serve in the CBI later in the war. The Doolittle Raid occurred at about the same time I enlisted in the Army and joined the paratroops. I could not have imagined then that Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot and I would become friends so many decades later. During our many times together Dick and I discussed the ongoing responsibility we remaining veterans of The Second World War had to pass down our memories to younger generations. Dick continued that mission to the very end of his long life.

For those of us fortunate enough to live to a very old age, losing friends and loved ones becomes an all too often occurrence. It never looses its sting and sense of loss. So it is for me today.

Included here are photos of Dick and I at various functions and events over the years. - Jim "Pee Wee" Martin (G/506)
