I got 4 ships, names:

Sidewinder - Capri
Eagle - unnamed (never used it)
Diamondback Explorer - Thistledown
Asp Explorer - unnamed

My Eagle is unnamed simply because initially I didn't even know I had it biggrin and I never really did anything with it other than take it for one spin.
My Asp is unnamed just because I haven't hit on the right one yet.

Capri is named that because my first car was a Ford Capri.
Thistledown is named that because it was my first "deep" exploration, and the city in the sci-fi book "Eon" was called Thistledown. If any of you have ever read it, that city disappeared down an infinite artificial universe.

I haven't done livery or avatar alteration, tbh I find that side of games to be uninteresting, and a little "my-little-pony"-esque biggrin
No offence to anyone who does :/ smile

Love this thread already. I feel sheepish sometimes mentioning ship names, and asking others what they call their ship. Many players probably don't care about it at all. But I grew up around the water, around boats, and fully subscribe to the traditions and superstitions of all things nautical. A ship's name is important! So with that said....

My fleet (minus the three I sold last week)

iCourier -- Velocity. I actually changed the name of this ship. In order to not fall afoul of Poseidon I sold the old Courier and just bought another. Never change a ship's name! Or carry bananas. You have been warned. The name is because it boosts nearly 800

AspX -- Dawnbreaker. Named after the sword in Skyrim. I let my 8 year old son Ben name it. When he saw it it was silhouetted against a star, so appeared to 'glow' and it reminded him of the same effect on the sword.

Python -- Takao After the Japanese cruiser. My concept for my Python was always 'armed merchant cruiser'. So a cruiser name fits.

Orca -- Stratocaster I play guitar and own several Strats. Homage to one of the world's most perfectly designed instruments.

FDL -- Eagle Weslake Named after Dan Gurney's 1967 Formula One car. To this day it remains the only American car to win a F1 race. The most beautiful race car of all time too smile

DBX -- Mad Hops When I bought it then engineered it I said to myself, it has Mad Hops! And it stuck.

Anaconda -- Rum Runner It's rare that I play Elite without a glass of Rum.

Krait II -- Poison Whiskey Newest addition to the fleet. Named after the Lynyrd Skynyrd song. One of my favorite bands of all time.

For what it's worth I have yet to buy a paint job or ship kit or any extras at all. But I am kicking around some new paints. Especially the FDL.

Hmm album names are a great idea. My favourite album has always been Tubular Bells, but I feel that's not a great name for an Asp. But another great Mike Oldfield album, Ommadawn, might fit.

*edit
I think I'm going to go for "Ommadawn's Song".

I name mine after breeds of dog. Not played in a while so i can't remember the types, but my do-it-all ship is The Longdog, my heavy combat is The Saluki Lurcher, fast combat The Whippet and my miner The Dachshund. (Just done a CPU, Motherboard and RAM upgrade so I need to check out how it's affected performance in VR, but it's a pain in the arse switching from steering wheel to HOTAS controls!)

cheers

Dave's not here man!

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

Will probably sell the Type 6. I also have a couple of Eagles and Sidewinders spread around that I used for disposable taxis that should be scrapped. Plus another Cobra Mk. III sitting around. I should name or sell the FAS...since it never gets any use...

I wish I could make a decal of that TENGU picture for my 'Conda!

Yes, erudite and the lesser known recondite are often found together.

I sold three ships a couple weeks ago and it felt pretty good really. Could always buy them again later, you'll probably save the modules anyway. But I figured if I never fly them, may as well sell them. Then again, they aren't costing anything to be in drydock.

I'm getting to the point that many of you already are. That stage where you have tons of money, and a good selection of engineered modules in storage. So at any point you can buy whatever ship flips your fancy at the moment and you'll probably have what you need to install in it. Or at least fast track it. And once you have that sort of cash, the 10% hit you take selling the husk of the ship isn't even noticed.

Unfortunately, I don't have all that many Engineered modules in Storage. When I bought the Anaconda, I had to do ALMOST all of the ENGINEER Grind again, including finding HARD TO GET Materials. Honestly it is what stops me from realizing the CORVETTE Dream. A lot of the Anaconda Engineered modules would transfer, but I would really rather avoid the Outfitting Hokey Pokey whenever I wanted to fly another ship... LOL.. that grind was still a lot more fun than my current EXPLORATION GRIND...

Same here, even though I have no ships in view at the moment. But just getting what I already have up to spec is a chore. Like today I tried to unlock Hera Tani only to find you can't have more than 45 of the required 50 cigars (is that right?) so you're forced to fly there twice just to unlock. That doesn't even count any engineering. She/he is not so important to me, but I need he/she to get to Broo Tarquin to finally get my lasers done. And to unlock him it's even more restricted trips as I understand it. 50 tea, five at a time?

Is Hera Tani a he or she? Can't tell from the name nor the picture lol.

Broo and Didi are the ones I need most to get my combat crate nearer to done. Don't have enough G5 stuff to do it all anyway.

Imagine if engineering wasn't a thing. Would Elite be better or worse off for it?

I seem to remember that you can load more in a single trip when the system with the rares is in boom state.
On the other hand you can be screwed if the system is in lockdown, as it often happens with Lave because of a conflict between two (player) factions (and thus the Brandy needed for one of the engineers).

That's good info WC. I did two of these unlocks yesterday. 50 Kamitra cigars for Hera Tani, and then 50 Fujin tea for Broo Tarquin.

Kamitra was in boom and I could take 45, so two trips

Fujin was in Investment, I could buy 23, so took three trips.

Aside from an hour in the SRV getting more raw mats, in particular Selenium for efficient beams, these unlock trips (and some engineering as a result) were all I did for an entire evening. The trips were 150-200 light years each way from rare goods store to the engineer base. At least those are done and grade 5 access at each now.

This info might come a little late (haven't played since the 3.3 beta test phase, memories come back slowly...), but I just remembered that rares also restock once after a short time. That means waste 5-10mins with something else, and you only need half the number of trips. If you can combine that with the boom state, the grind can be eased significantly.

For me there were two ways to make those missions:
1. use the ship whit the longest jump range and grind through them
2. use a proper trade ship and turn it into a series of multi-hop trade runs

I used my Krait with a C5 GFSDB, for 40 jump. A little better that half that of my DBX. Glad I did too, because I was chain interdicted like a b!tch. The first run to Hera Tani saw me interdicted no less than 6 times by an Elite Gunship. I kept submitting and running, then blew his ass up when he did it again as I departed the station having turned in the cigars. I would have gotten no satisfaction in the DBX, not least because it is unarmed.

Same deal later with a Deadly Chieftain who chained me and died after the first tea turn-in.

Thanks for the kind offer, friend smile But that would leave me little to complain about, ya know. I need Lavian Brandy. 50 units. Arrangements at the discretion of anyone willing to help.

Looks like 24 is max purchase according to Inara. So I need three buys total.

I also need antimony and grid resistors, but I'm on my own for that.

Antimony can be farmed at the G5 raw system along with a bunch of other very rare G5’s. It’s around 1700 ly from Shinrarta. Well worth the trip. Filled up on all the G5’s cept Selenium. Took bout 3 hrs actual collection time. Google “ crystalline shards”

Not as abundant, but closer according to EDDB. Even at 1.3-1.5% you should be able to pickup enough in a relatively short time without the long trip:

Ref system was Dvorsi

I am yes. However, my PC died last night after signing off. Video card maybe. I'll disassemble and put everything back together and see i I can identify the culprit. But I'm down for the count.

Sorry to hear that DB! That really sucks!! Hope it's something simple and easy to fix.

Thanks Bo, you should be able to deal well through my crisis biggrin

Man, did this thread go off track. We are still interested in ship names if folks want to contribute but are run off by the runaway train.

If anyone's on tonight and you don't see me, please pass the word on to Wingnuts in case he misses my tribulations here. I told him last night in-game I would be there tonight. But best laid plans and all that.

Still an outside shot I get it running, but I fear a new graphics card is in order.

Unfortunately I got rid of all my old cards during my last move. Actually, I do have an old NVIDIA GTX 285 in this box which is supposed to be for PHYSX, but I am not sure it is doing anything...it is showing an ! in Device Manager, so it might have died...

I'm down and out. PC wouldn't even post. Could be main board, hard drive, anything at this point. As much fun as I was having playing Elite, and I was making good progress too!, I just can't be arsed at the moment to deal with it.

Thanks gents for the sympathy.

On the plus side my dog is happier as I'm playing with him more. And the house is cleaner as I suddenly have lots of free time smile

At the mo I am leaning toward buying/building a new box, and then I can figure out what's wrong with the old one, fix it, and give it to my son. I am not feeling a new build though.

This thread is so far off the rails that I may as well keep it going.

I've spent the past few days conflicted as I have both enjoyed the break from gaming, and have missed it at the same time lol.

I went with plan B. Build a new box. Ordered the parts today. It'll be a budget build based on a Ryzen/1660Ti. It should crush Elite anyway. My dead box did, so this one should be marginally better, and I am OK with that. Once the parts get here it, how soon I am back in the 'pit will depend entirely on my motivation. When I was building boxes at 30 I was all in. At 51, it lacks similar appeal. The deciding factor was that I priced pre-builts and didn't want to pay someone a grand to do it for me. I sure wish someone would build it for free! I guess someone will banghead

I can sympathise with you DBond. I used to build all my own PC's. I did it for family and friends and then for friends of friends. Now at 59 I don't want to do another one ever. My last 2 PC's have been custom builds from Overclockers.co.uk here in the UK. I've never owned anything 'cutting edge' so I need a new one every 5 years or so.

Yeah Chucky, right there with ya. The parts I bought ran about $900. I priced similar builds at a number of companies. Most were nearly $1000 higher.

These companies buy components for far less than I can, so they are seemingly charging in excess of $1000 to put it together. It's just too much. If there was a $300 markup I could live with it. The best pricing was from CyberPower but I read too many horror stories and decided against it. There is a reason they are so cheap I reckon. If they had glowing reviews I may have gone that route to save me the trouble.

Better names like Origin, Digital Storm, Velocity Micro and so on were all about $1800-$2000 for a similar box. I have a thread in the hardware subforum with more detail on the components I chose. Parts should be arriving over the next few days, and I will buckle down at some point and attempt to make them work nicely together.

I always build my own systems as well, but almost always at a time of my own choosing. Upgrading sucks when it's forced on you.

Bright side is you'll have a nice shiny new toy, and your son might wind up with something he'll enjoy as well.

Well said. It was running great, and everything I play ran like butter on it. Upgrading only becomes a thing once it dawns on you that your new favorite game struggles to run smoothly. All of a sudden you're thinking you need to upgrade.

I had yet to come close to that point so to have it die was deflating. Building an entire new machine instead of just fixing the dead one might seem a strange solution, but you obviously read my plan involves giving my son a kick-ass machine as I pass on the hobby. It'll blow away anything his friends might have and that makes it all worth while biggrin

It's not just the fact I have to put it together, but then there is cabling, drivers, reinstalling software, remapping controls, and on and on and it's exhausting at this age! Haha. Remember back in the day when we would defrag before installing anything new? Or managing swapfiles.Or just formatting your drive on a regular schedule? None of that bothered me then. But even just thinking about it now and I shudder. I've moved on to want as work-free gaming as I can get.

Speaking of which.... My Steam install was on my mechanical drive, and that's likely good to go and I can put it in the new box. Can I install Steam on the new machine, and have it see my old Steam folder without issues? Would be great to not have to reinstall all my games. I imagine this can't work because there would be no registry entries, or maybe Steam doesn't need that? Just hoping to find some shortcuts.

Reading the steps that are involved made groan. I don't envy you in that. I upgraded mysystem recently, but it didn't require reinstalling everything, it was just swapping in the new parts and letting windows figure it out.

I'm guessing "no" on the Steam library, but if you used the cloud option you can at least take comfort in knowing your saves aren't lost.

I keep my Steam games on a separate disk. If I have to reinstall the O/S I just install Steam and it picks up all the games. No need to reinstall any of them.

That's reassuring Chucky. I assume I would need to 'point' Steam toward the disk with the games already on it, and it's all good from there?

It's possible that my OS drive is also still good. But past experience with putting an OS drive from one machine in to another with all different hardware can lead to trouble. Maybe that's not so much of an issue these days, but I planed to use the new SSD instead of the old one. So at min I think for Elite, I will have to remap everything and journals would be gone. I could hook up that SSD too and transfer these journals. Are they all that important?

Yup,that's right. It's never failed me yet.

Not sure what you mean by journals but I have my E:D controls backed up so I don't ever have to remap them.

I've intended to back them up myself. Actually doing it is far more useful smile

It won't take too long to remap.

Journals (JSON) are files Elite generates that basically track everything you do. Useful for third party sites, but I suppose more so as a backup since I use EDMC. Haven't needed to use a JSON file since I started using it so probably no big deal.

If you can still access the original OS drive after you get the new one set up, you might be able to rescue the bindings from the Elite directory. You don't do any kind of cloud backup do you?
I use Carbonite and it backs up everything on my computer. Price isn't too bad either, and it gives peace of mind.

About half a year ago a Windows 10 update crashed my system to the point that I couldn't boot - had to reinstall... However, with the games on different disk/partitions hardly anything was lost on that end. Even to the point of ED mappings and such.
When I got this PC about two years ago, I either just moved the disks from the old to the new PC (2x SSD + 1 HDD) or temporarily hooked up the main disk from the old PC to copy stuff over.

All this recent talking about E:D, I decided to play again as well this weekend. However, what scared me a little was indeed to setup the control mappings for the new exporation tools and such - I stopped during the beta-phase for 3.3, thus I had a mapping for that. Tried to find the beta mapping file to copy it over the regular game - took me a little while to realise that beta and regular game seem to use the same mapping file, and thus everything was still setup and ready to go banghead
Not looking forward to map the new mining stuff though.... But such are future troubles - I went straight to a little expedition (with no specific goals) - right now I am >7kly out (further than I have ever been before, close to the Heart and Soul nebulaes), in my trusty old AspX Jolly Jumper.
EDSM rates the value of my discoveries on this trip to almost 250 million credits already - considering that I didn't find a lot of special things like ELWs or AWs (2 of each, I think), and mostly just mapped (=probed) terraformables, the first scanned/mapped bonusses seem to be inflationary, compared to my past experience pre-3.3.

Welcome back! The only mapping you'll need to do for mining is assigning fire groups.

No I don't use da Cloud.

I thought the bindings were kept somewhere else, like documents or something. They are in the Elite directory?

Per default they are somewhere in an "Frontier Developments/Elite" folder in AppData or some such, not in the Elite installation directory. Which doesn't mean that you could not backup them to the cloud (but I don't do so either), or indeed just plug the old system drive to the new PC and simply copy it from there.

Going by the forums, the new mining (esp. Void Opals) seems to be the new bonanza, earing billions in hours or some such. I guess by the time I return to the bubble, they will have adjusted it again... Then again, I will be billionaire anyway, already with the data that I aquired by now; almost 900kk "in the bank", and EDSM estimates >200kk worth of exploration data accumulated in 3 or 4 days - and I am far from going home...

I want to ask DM if you are bothered by this extreme derail of your thread. PM me if needed. I can request a moderator removes all of the stuff not ship name related and make a new thread of it. Sorry for doing this to your thread. My fault.

On the plus side, my stuff has shipped and if it all arrives tomorrow I MIGHT be back in business before the day is out.

Heck no, it's all good smile I'm always interested to hear people's experiences in this game wherever the source.

Good luck smile I've been rather lucky with my PC which I built 8 years ago - I made it well at the time, as fast and large as I could make it at the time and aside from a graphic card update has handled everything I ever threw at it. I don't look forward to the day when something fails.

OK cool, thanks man.

Parts arrived, build is done, aside from aesthetics. Had to be sure it worked first. Love that new PC snap. Boots in 15 seconds. Of course that will gradually get longer as time goes on, but pretty cool right now.

Now I need to reinstall software, update drivers and tweak settings. But I have a gaming PC once more. Looking forward to seeing how it performs.

There's something about putting all those parts together, turning it on, and.....it works!

This is known as "bad luck.”

Thanks. Elite is installing while I am sitting outside my son's school. When I get back I will set up the Cougar, remap and hopefully give it a go.

Someone (Who Cares?) recently suggested using the function in Inara to link it to your Frontier account. I've tried it before and got an 'access denied by user' error when attempting to log in to steam during the process. So I gave up and kept using EDMC. On this new box I tried again and same thing. Must be a setting. Anyone know what I need to do to get Inara linked to my Steam/Frontier account?

Got everything remapped, and actually made some changes I had been thinking of, added more functions to the stick. Remap only took about 10 minutes, not bad. Where are the bindings stored? I should back them up. Is it is appdata folder?

Nevermind, I was thinking I was supposed to choose my platform. But I was supposed to choose Frontier. Did so and it worked. Not sure why that wasn't obvious to me. Not the sharpest...

Most of my cargo haulers are "Mom's Grocery Getter", my Sidewinders are "Lil Mule Pepe" (Romancing the Stone reference), explorers are "Phyxius", an Eagle named "SS Dan Daly" and a Krait Mk2 named "Crepe Mk2"... even looks flat like a delicious pancake...
