I've been dabbling in Falcon, LOMAC and DCS for nearly 20 years, and enjoying them all. But I'm currently looking for something more serious than an arcade fighter game but less demanding than a DCS study sim. VTOL VR and Combat Air Patrol 2 are both still in early access. Both look interesting. VTOL VR has more and better reviews on Steam, but CAP2 looks quite a bit better graphically. Anyone have any experience with these titles? Any comparative comments? Any counsel about which is the wiser buy?

I can only comment on CAP2. Although it looks promising the progress is very slow. There is still not much to do in the sim at the moment and many things still don't work as intended. If you wish to support the developer you might get it, but you have to be patient.
