In a world trying to belittle who "we" are and where "we" come from that letter written by Lt. Cmdr. John Shea is really worth reading.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe three US fleet carriers were lost during the war. Hornet, Wasp and Yorktown.

I know a few light and escort carriers were lost as well.

Edit: I forgot about Lexington. So 4 fleet carriers were lost.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I think some dust got in my eye there while reading the letter.

Thanks for posting that link F4U.

As the dad of two young children, I found John Shea's letter to his son tremendously affecting.
On par with the Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife eighty years earlier.
