I can imagine that there were probably at least few mishaps like that during Operation Market Garden, Operation Merkur and D-Day. biggrin

Besides Timothy, do we have any other active duty paratroopers here?

I’m a retired paratrooper.

I’ve seen similar problems during jumps, but only when fully combat loaded. Those were Hollywood jumpers and weren’t encumbered with combat load.

I was parachute qualified, but never a paratrooper.

But one can ask me about being Air Assault. I'm fully vetted there.

Not necessarily. Air Assault qualification was spread through all the divisions. A lot of Air Assault dealt with sling-loading. That was done by almost every combat unit. Actually I found Air Assault harder than Airborne, but had nowhere near the prestige.

never jumped, but had to do the training, including jumping off a tower in a harness before I was allowed to fly as a cadet with the RAF, but man that was a long, long time ago smile

But in my case, Screaming Eagles, Baby!

Yep, sling loads, setting up LZ's, etc., in addition to all the other stuff.

Btw, when given a headset, ALWAYS ask the pilot of the Blackhawk if he's new, "since you seem to be flying pretty high and slow compared to the other pilots." smile

The only time I supported the 101st (1975) I got a chance to ride on a Loach. WO-4 pilot was absolutely certifiable. Definitely NOT new. Flying over dirt roads on Ft. Campbell at 60 knots or more. Had to look up to see the treetops most of the time.

But it was fuuuunnnn. I'd ride with him any time.
