This has been broadcast Sunday and Monday and concluding tonight. There is 204 breeds and breed variants participating. Granted they are 'dolled' up for the show but what got me were two things.

First was how the breeders have breed the English Bulldog for a short nose (makes it hard for the dog to breath properly and the German Shepard which looks like it has been abused with its butt close to the ground.

Second is the handlers of the prime examples of the breeds. Many of these handlers are not what one would call even near prime examples of Homo Sapien. eek

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Those who breed for "Show" have often made serious problems for dog breeds. Bulldogs who can hardly breathe or give birth on their own. Collies with heads so narrow that their brain is constricted and they go mad. German Shepherds with such poor hip structure they are crippled by 10 etc etc.

Look at photos of bulldogs from pew WW1. They are taller and the head is not so short. Newfoundland dogs are also starting to suffer from "show" / designer breeding. Breeders have been exaggerating the domed skull for so long that the jaw and nasal structure is starting to suffer. Newfs and Labs were actually once the same dog. They had a very similar head shape. There are pictures of the mascot of the Newfoundland regiment from over 100 years ago. They were all champion dogs but their faces looked much more like a Labrador than the modern Newfs. Its sad.

I was watching a PBS or TVO program a couple of years ago on breeding dogs. Initially it was for work of some kind but when showing came about it became about exaggerations it is as Archie says. It was a British program and it was stated at the end that the Brits wantrd to return to the old look of the dog. Don't know how this is going tho.

Yeah it is, running my hand down the back of my friends GS I got warned not to press too hard as I could knock her hips out, sadly she passed away a few months ago survived by her son Darko and now a new pup.

With thousands of unwanted dogs being killed by shelters everyday it is a disgrace that any dogs are bred for show or for sale.

Adopt, don't buy.
