Watched it the same night as Hurricane. Spitfire was better.
I agree with the fantastic cinematography, but I found it as a documentary sorely lacking. It was more a hour-and-a-half love oath/aircraft porn video than a balanced and objective telling of the Spitfire, abusing its good looks to overstate its career. I didn't expect Morgan & Shacklady's "Spitfire: The History" to be put into an hour-and-a-half documentary, but I hoped for a little bit less chauvinism, and a little bit more objectivity.
By the way, IMDB tells me that this director is also responsible for "Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo", which had the exact same problems, and this year he is going to rape Neil Armstrong's legacy. Dear, oh dear, oh dear...
F4UDash4, thank you so much for posting this. I have Prime and just watched this and Absolutely Loved it. It brought tears to my eyes hearing these Heroic Pilots tell of the remembrances of there times in the Spitfire when they were anywhere from 18 to 21 or 22 maybe. The music was so good and complimented the whole documentary. I have 9.1 surround sound and an AV receiver that will take any signal and put it through all of my speakers. WOW, I cranked it up for some of the flybys and it was awesome. I want to try to find some way to buy this. Thanks again for posting.
To be fair Vaderini it is not meant to be a worts and all documentary, it's a celebration of one of the most iconic aircraft ever built, backed up by actual combat and ferry pilots experiences. It is to show how highly regarded the Spitfire is now, but more importantly how it was in that very dark period of the war when Europe was about to finally crumble to the Nazis, and later how impotant it was in the war as a whole.
Awe inspiring, expecially as I am currently making a MKIa Spitfire flyable for WOTR.
Agreed Blade, the music is fantastic on those flybys and dramatic moments.

Sadly three of the contributors who flew, fought and transported the Spitty died just before release, though I do believe they previewed the footage before they passed: Mary Ellis 'Boy' Wellum 'Ginger' Neil
A most fitting tribute to them and the others involved in this iconic aircraft. I hope that someone will do similar justice for it's worthy, less glamorous and undersung comrade the Hurricane!

Yes, sad indeed. We are losing the Greatest Generation rapidly now.

The looks on Mary Ellis's face were some of the best parts of that movie.
