1) I was flying Albi with about 15 of my 'Green Tailed' squad mates and two insane SPAD VII aircraft dived down to 'play'! I don't mind being the recipient of attention from time to time but why is it 'always'? I was flying with the formation. I wasn't a 'straggler'. I wasn't on the end. Can someone explain to me why this always occurs? I'd like to be the guy who comes to the aid of a squad mate instead of the other way around.

2) I was by myself being chased by a Nieuport 23 aircraft and some 'friendlies' flew past the opposite direction just a few meters above and kept going. I hit the 'attack' key and got the 'okay' response but... nada, nuthin, no dice, nothing! What gives!?

FWIW: the N23 and SPAD were knocked down by me!

They must've know it was the mighty ARUP, world famous ace, and trying to "help" would be a waste of fuel! Pretty smart AI, eh?! wink

what are you workshop settings for the AI? if you've got them selected as "AI never gives up" this part sounds pretty normal.

I've spent more hours of my life playing flight sims than I probably should have... but this sounds pretty typical. it's also why the first thing I changed was to put the AI on the historical mode. sometimes the AI will dive down and attack superior forces... but they usually give up and leave you alone a lot faster!

Maybe you have enhanced AI on, or some other option.

Regarding enemies ignoreing you sometimes. Many possibilities, sometimes aircraft are bugging out going home, or scared running, fatigued, maybe novices, or out of ammo, damaged, or on a mission of their own, or low morale and will not engage you,and so on.

Not to pile on, but my experience over the years is I'm always targeted. I've watched several or even a single fighter attack my entire Staffel, fly right past several disadvantaged wingmen between he and I that could have flamed easily, to laser-focus and attack me. I've been told the AI doesn't do that, or at least they aren't coded to do that, but in my OBD sim(s), they do do it. Sometimes I don't mind, but mostly I don't want to fight the entire enemy air force single-handed.

This probably is of no comfort, but I too have had the same experiences, however, I also often am not the object of attack when in formation.
I think there may be some advantage to being the squad leader, as you can then regulate to some degree how your squad acts to an incoming attack. It seems that if you initiate an attack response, the squad is more likely to join in and relieve some of the pressure. The down side is that they also have no qualms about stealing your kill.

Explain it all away as much as you want to but the truth is out there. The AI JUST DON'T LIKE US! Why should they. We walk into their world and act like it's ALL ABOUT US. then we leave, without even a thank you or Kiss my Hand. "Oh yeah" sorry I got you all killed again this time, hope the fire didn't hurt too much." I have them fly past me all the time when they could help me out. They are obviously just saying, to quote the great Cartman: "Screw you guys, I'm goin' home. neaner

Naw, seriously, I get a little frustrated with some of the AI strange behavior. For instance, when flight A and B are in close proximity and we get attacked and they just continue patrolling within a mile and a half of us or less. But they're doing the best they can with the logic they are given and they're still the best game in town.

Yeah, I realize there are limitations to everything. When I get sick of this one, I just fly something else, until I get sick of their limitations, etc. I don't have a stringent one-sim-adherence. Although one of the earlier OFF phases gave me one of the best kills I've had in a flight sim. Saw an FE2 waaaaay down below me, over the trees, alone, and screamed down after him. When I got close I could see he was very damaged from some prior altercation with someone, flak, whatever, and was struggling/limping back across the lines. There was no return fire from him, and although I'm not daft enough to approach an FE2 from anything other than a blind spot, I think the obs was KiA. And, no, of course I didn't let him go! I flamed him down into the trenches.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I have settings on 'normal' and 'historical'. I have limited fuel and ammo, sun glare and 'blood to splatter on goggles' setting. I still have 'head shake' though I'd get rid of it if I could figure the buttons to push (there is a tutorial but I just can't figure it out... I'm analog... that's why I love WWI airplanes!) The AI runs away after a while when they get tired of chasing or fighting me, too, but if possible, I always chase them until the 'end'! This SIM is still the best! I would be really bummed if I couldn't play it!

The AI know nothing of who is the player - no code at all for that.

They will usually target the first closest (highest threat) craft they spot. So in QC you are often at the front and will be targetted with other nearest AI. So circle around some don't go direct to the enemy in QC.
If you are flight leader and head to the attack (in QC / Campaign) you may be the first in line.

We can look at adding options to obey the workshop settings for always lead / not etc for QC so you don't lead the flight and therefore don't more often get targetted.

Hi everyone,

I have the similar issue with attacking, I don't know if anyone mentioned it before;
Flying with Jasta 2 for sometime (since end 1917), started with Alb.DV, and now flying with DR1 in 1918 May. Made more than 70 missions during this period, and what I realized is that our formation never attacks to formations of SPADS. Even we have the height advantage, and we are like 10-12 in number and SPADS are only 2 or 3 in number, our leader always head for the nearest aerodrame to retreat, and tries to land. Most of the time if SPADS decided engage, our formation becomes like sitting ducks while trying to land. Even it was SPAD VII or XIII, it doesn't matter.
However, the attacks to Camel formations (and others) is logical, it seems that leaders considers the conditions. But I think SPADS are considered like "super planes" in Germany smile I am the only one in entire Jasta 2 who is fighting with them, which are much more easy targets for me than the Camels or 2 seaters.

I don't know if anyone seen this before, but it seems obvious to me now after so many missions. Any comment will be appreciated.

The next version of WOFF has lots of tweaks, improvements and fixes including revised morale settings and fighters that engage more frequently, so hopefully you can try that when it's released (no date).

Pol. While on subject of altering AI behavior. If historically accurate can you make the AI logic of escort missions different than any other mission by making some fighters not run away or some two-seater complete their mission and not run away. Also, random AI who will sometimes turn back and fight when running away without prompting it by shooting at it. Thanks.

See above it should help. Turning back probably not at this stage. WOTR does that but has a TON of under the hood changes to allow things like that. It's too much work to bring all things in, and the sales won't support that large work involved just to add a few features, when we have brought in many where possible coming in this future update of WOFF - but not all are possible without a lot more support from sales.

Pol, wonderful news and once again thank you for keeping WOFF updated. Quick question: would it take too much effort to have the AI controlled planes recognize that their target is on fire and there is no point continuing to shoot it? It’s on fire, it will go down. The reason I’m asking is because they take unnecessary risks and often end up ramming the plane on fire, just to finish it off. They also follow them in the spiral of death all the way to the ground, becoming lawn ornaments themselves.
