I’ll watch the video later, but just from the title I can tell you that there are plenty of pilots out there. Just not very many qualified, able pilots with the right frame of mind to operate in a commercial environment. Lots of hot shots with their parents’ money who are in it for the Ray Bans and shiny jets. The decline of stick and rudder skills is real, and the airplanes, no matter how advanced, are still bound by the same physical laws as always. Newton never takes a break.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Have you seen what the salary is for new pilots at most airlines?
You might as well get your A+ certification and do IT support instead. You’ll make more money.

Unless you end up in the majors after a few years. AA, United, Delta and even Southwest have salaries and working conditions we only can dream of here in Europe.

There is some truth to the so-called "pilot shortage". But don't believe all of the hype. Yes, there is an abundance of pilot jobs and that will continue for the next 10, maybe 15 years.
I am a E175 captain at a regional airline and have had my apps out at just about every major airline. I've got most ideal boxes checked like 4 year degree, volunteerism, additional non-flying duties, internal recs, but the phone is silent. Competition is still fierce for those top tier jobs at United, American, Delta, etc... . Much of this profession (and probably many professions) is luck and timing. I could go on and on, but don't want to come off jaded/disillusioned. I still enjoy the flying aspect. If I wasn't married with kids, I'd be flying overseas. That is where the shortage truly exists... like Asia and Europe. And the pay is much better than stateside. I've had offers from various international airlines on LinkedIn !! Of course, that involves leaving everything behind and starting a new life in a new country.
The other alternative is to fly in the military. (I'm too old now) They are hurting (because those pilots are leaving for the airline pasture) and need new boots.

Do you have the same massive amount of contractors over there as in Europe? Basically all of for example Ryanair’s pilots are contractors with no rights whatsoever.

U.S. Airlines don't use pilot contractors mainly due to union contracts in place. (except many sim instructor positions are contracted out.) But there are plenty of qualified pilots out there anyway. However, in the business aviation side, there are more than enough contractors out there and it's a growing trend because they can charge twice as much as an employed salaried corporate or charter pilot especially in higher end aircraft life Gulfstream G550, Global Express, Falcon 7X/8X, etc.... Plus you control your own schedule. This is the path I have been chasing lately. But bizav is all about who you know, not what you know.
