Thanks, David. cheers

The breakdown (IMO)...

Matthew Sweet. I'm enjoying the two tracks you posted (almost a modern-day Beatles Rock/Pop sound), but I didn't get into the albums so much (from Amazon preview to selected full songs on YouTube). Maybe over time I will as those two tracks continue to grow on me. From performing with Michael Stipe/R.E.M. in the 80's Athens college scene, to being on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, seems like a cool dude.

Now with the other two bands (also with interesting impressive backgrounds...Wikipedia), the full albums did grab me...

Screaming Trees. On the show I mentioned earlier about nineties music, Nancy Wilson of Heart talks about going to Seattle clubs in the early-90's to see bands like Cat Butt and Screaming Trees. "Sweet Oblivion" is a solid album...
Sweet Oblivion - Screaming Trees

Arc Angels. I'm pretty sure this band is mentioned as well, and the self-tiled album is not only good but is only $6.00... smile
Arc Angels - Arc Angels

Nice finds (listening to "Good Time" as I started typing, now "See What Tomorrow Brings"...intro sounds a bit Beatles as well..."Sun King"), thanks again.

++++++++++

My last day on this project, adding a couple of (and my first songs by) Dave Matthews Band to Runner-ups ("#41" and "Grey Street").

Also purchased and will add the greatest love song ever written. The 70's had Frampton, the 80's had Journey, but the 90's had Henry Rollins, keeping romance real...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awY1MRlMKMc

Beavis approves of this song. biggrin

++++++++++

Speaking of which...

The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience

Amazon Comments:

"I HATE MYSELF AND WANT TO DIE, ORIGINAL VERSION. ENOUGH SAID."

"The Beavis & Butt-head Experience has some awesome 90's rock tracks that you're not going to find anywhere else. For Nirvana fans, this is the only place to find the original mix of the In Utero sessions track "I Hate Myself And Want To Die".

Note that the lyrics are nonsense and not at all related to the bleak title...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Hate_Myself_and_Want_to_Die

You may get "In the someday what's that sound?" stuck in your head, though. The song to me is much better than the fillers on "Nevermind" and "In Utero".

This thread has been such an awesome nostalgia trip for the 90's!

Glad you've enjoyed it, PM. smile I know I sure have.

I'm going to post my final listings tonight, but if something pops up in the future, I'll look into it. This is how I'm going to do it, with three listings of songs:

1. Top 200 90's.
2. Runner-up 90's (probably around 70 songs).
3. Y2K+ (probably around 30 songs).

2. and 3. will = exactly 100 songs, for a 300 song total.

I'm doing it this way, not just to limit the number of songs, but to make three or four MP3 CDs for my car (has no USB support and I like the idea of old-school 90's CDs). I'll also have a flash drive version.

About the only Y2K+ band I know is Evanescence, so I won't have many songs on that final listing.

++++++++++

Quick story of how I know of Evanescence...

My niece was going through a teenage Goth(?) phase and was playing "Bring Me To Life." I couldn't believe that I actually recognized a song that she was listening to (after so many that I didn't). I didn't know who or what it was, but I'd heard it on a Falcon video (which I still have, of course)...

(ECV-56 CONDOR ***OPERATION AL ROJO VIVO (Operation RED_HOT)*** ALA FALCON 4.0
CAS (features an A-10)

Scripted by: Roy "Sombra" Vazquez
Coordination: Pablo "Valkiria" Diez, Roy "Skull One" Reyes
...along with some other names, including a dedication to Nicole Hammer.

SuperPAK 3 f4ut (Falcon 4 Unified Team).
www.ecv56condor.com.ar (wow, still works!)

If not for SimHQ I wouldn't know half of the "newer" songs that I do...which still isn't many. smile

It's never too late, David. It's just that I've run out of days and energy to put the amount of time into it that I have been, so updating will now go much slower. Late last night I was working on the latest listings graphics for my first post and fell asleep in my office chair. sleepy

But please keep'um coming as you think of them, I'll eventually get to them. BTW, I already have four of those Smashing Pumpkins as well as the Mazzy Star but that's ok, I enjoy the videos ("Tonight, Tonight" won awards, IIRC). Cracker's "Low"...I remember that one!

I know that my musical tastes mostly reflects the stereotypical white American male in his early 50's who still enjoys vintage radio-friendly Rock. I don't branch too far from that, so it's always a nice surprise to find a new song (often one I've just forgotten about and that never made it into my music library).

But sometimes it's something completely new to me, like these back-to-back tunes from Arc Angels' self-titled album (some Funk followed by Groove)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YciYTArmmrw

==========
"The band was composed of guitarist and singers Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton and two former members of Stevie Ray Vaughan's band Double Trouble, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon."

"In recent years, Bramhall has played guitar in Eric Clapton's band and toured with Roger Waters."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_Angels
==========

Song used for cool SRV tribute...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28pp5ULFMlQ

And *that's* why I created this thread! smile I'm about to post final listings for a while but I'll keep updating, keeping it at 300 songs total (~22 hours of music).

++++++++++

I've also learned a lot about 90's bands and music the past few days. For example, I had no idea that Creed was so hated! biggrin I typically ignore their religious overtones and tattered history, because even their deep cuts appeal to me musically...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsdUsVvBGIw

...and while I'm serious about music in general (by far my favorite medium), I don't take the music or musicians too seriously. But I'm not going to pretend that I don't like Creed. exitstageleft

My favorite Creed video ("One")... smile

Listings updated on first two posts. I'll update again in the future as weaker songs get replaced. BTW, I kept the one Pink Floyd song in the runner-ups because, as with a couple others, it's a song about historic events at the beginning of the decade.

Music is so subjective, I know. I figure that with a Top 200 and another 100 of runner-ups and handful of Y2K+ songs, most here could choose at least 50 of my 300 favorite 90's songs and make their own playlist for a day. But, maybe not. smile

Indeed it is subjective and I've found that many people's music preferences are heavily influenced by what environment they were raised in.

For example, Country Music. It's been my experience that the vast majority of people I know who like Country Music like it because it is what they were raised with. In other words, they were raised "country".

I can count on one hand the number of people I know who discovered Country Music as an adult and then ended up enjoying it.

Oh, no doubt.

Since you mentioned Country Music...my cut-off for Country is early-to-mid 80's Alabama, but nothing more recent than that. I can tolerate some Brad Paisley only for my wife and even then, I *much* prefer his songs that have no vocals (he has many pure instrumentals, even cut a mostly instrumental album). I can listen to him play all day as long as he keeps his mouth shut. smile

Yet I can groove so hard to old Merle, George, Willie, etc. (at least the songs on their Hits compilations)! But that's because those songs remind me of good times and people. I could use older songs like "The Grand Tour" or "The Door" as examples, but here's something possibly more palatable for non-fans (besides "He Stopped Loving Her Today")...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi3GgoLtlWk

Hey, I'm going to do an old Country Music thread one day! biggrin I do look forward to going back to Nashville (their downtown Classic Rock nightlife is freaking unbelievable) and getting a proper tour of The Grand Ole Opry.

So maybe it's the environment in which you're raised (for me that would be in a mostly rural lower middle-class all white neighborhood) as well as your experiences. I don't know what, if any, impact your parent's music might have on you growing up. My father's favorite artists were/are Johnny Cash, CCR and James Brown. My mother's (an amateur pianist) favorite artists are Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, and anything Classical. My older brother listened to what's now Classic Rock (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Eagles, ELO, EL&P, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Boston, etc.) but also ConFunkShun, Gap Band (III), George Benson, EW&F...stuff like that. Lots of influences there, along with my brother constantly upgrading his Hi-Fi components. Rush was all mine, he also never got into my old Country and I never got into his old Blues (Muddy Waters stuff).

Both my brother (5 years older) and father (80) know a lot more about current artists and pop culture in general than I do. Brother, "You never heard of Imagine Dragons?" "Nope."

That one is pretty good too, Snap. I'd never heard of Mazzy Star and a few others listed until I purchased some 'Hits of the 90's' type CD's. You can probably tell when I enjoy a full album ("Cracked Rear View", "Automatic for the People", "Human Clay", "Live", etc.) as I also include deep cuts. But for many others I only know the one hit and just never dug deeper (or maybe I have and didn't care or it).

++++++++++

I watched a documentary last night on the life of Kurt Cobain. I thought it was good, I knew very little of what was presented on the program.

Something interesting was that apparently Kurt miss-understood what somewhat had written on a wall, "Kurt Cobain smells like Teen Spirit." He took it to mean something deeper when it fact it was a joke that he smelled like his girlfriend at the time who wore Teen Spirit deodorant. He wrote the song near the conclusion of recording Nervermind and after learning what the title meant, came to despise it (along with the overwhelming fame it brought him). So the story goes.

I do appreciate more of the songs on Nirvana's three albums (although I don't have the complete first album Bleach [1989]) as they're mostly written (sometimes abstractly) about his life. Now I know what, and who, some of their songs are about. The impression I got from the documentary was that Kurt would have been happier to let Nirvana, along with his ever increasing fame, die off after their third album In Utero, for Nirvana to be just another band that makes one or two successful albums and then falls into obscurity. He certainly didn't seem interested at all in the rich and famous lifestyle (Courtney drives home in a new Lexus, Kurt thinks his banged-up beater is good enough). But the pressure to keep the momentum going, his worsening heroin habit and problems with depression were just too much.

Now I'm curious as to what Teen Spirit actually smells like...

Of those, the only one I've heard of is Buckethead (the guitarist with a fried chicken bucket on his head?). I'll check them out, thanks.

Bumping this thread 'cause I'm crazy about the 90's again (mainly '90 - '95)!

The music, movies, games, still in first honeymoon period, having friends (if just a few, they all live in Atlanta).

Rereading Masters of Doom for at least the 5th time, did I mention games?

Oh man, the music...
