Just an "off the wall" observation:

I bought 'Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Ultimate Edition' a few days ago. Have over 12 hours of game play so far. Enough to see what I bought.

Its an RPG set in Ancient Greece. Has some interesting play features and a great story so far. Beautiful visuals. I like it.

I have all graphics options set to Ultra and the screen view set to 110 percent of normal -- "wait for vertical refresh" setting.

But, what I've noted (and why I'm writing) is this: Its visually great and shows no visual oddities at their 30FPS Maximum setting. That's an in-game setting they provide and "sell" as giving the player a great visual experience.

30FPS maximum at 1440p works for me. The Steam frame counter (always on for my Steam games) shows 30fps all the time. The in-game benchmark says the average would be 35FPS and low 30FPS if I did not have the 30FPS max turned on.

So what? Thing is, I can't get over how good this looks and works at 30FPS and 1440p at ultra settings and 110% view angle -- even though the fights are VERY fast at times. Makes me question the true need for more than 60FPS in games that are not human vs. human player competitions needing speedy responses.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
My first playtrough of Witcher3 was at 30FPS because I didn't want the changes from ~55 down to 28 I got sometimes.

Can't say I ever noticed, second playtrough in 4K the same now.

So yeah, fully agree that (maybe except racing games) a solud 30 beat a jerky 60 for me.

Sixty or higher FPS is more important for competitive shooters like Counterstrike
and such. Hence the need for high refresh monitors for advantages in gameplay.

Agreed....and it's not always in the graphics where you notice the difference. When you can compare a 30Hz/30fps game against a 60Hz/60fps or even 144Hz/144fps that's when you can really feel the difference and it's the responsiveness of the controls against what you're seeing on screen where it really shows. If you were to play a game using an extremely high frame rate/monitor response and then go back to 30fps it feels like you're playing on a sponge and either playing in slow motion or the controls are way behind your actual movements.

I noted above my setup got 35 fps when the game came out. Now, it gets 46 fps with all settings maxed (including 115% screen size). Don't know if its AMD Drivers or Game updates. I still play at 30fps.

Now that Ray Tracing is in the discussion, I'm paying attention to reflections, etc. -- in puddles or lakes, for example. They look realistic enough for the gameplay purpose on my system.

I've put in 190 hours (I like to grind, so it takes much longer) gotten to Level 57 and finished the initial main story line. They're updating and enlarging the story with new content during 2019 -- so, still playing.
