That really is mind blowing. The fact that a man-made object has made it that far out.

Mind blowing is also the fact that a rock guitarist is smart enough to understand and be involved in what they are doing.

Note the opening voice from Stephen Hawking.

I'm not surprised in the least. A lot of prominent and successful musicians and artists are quite brilliant. Their minds work in non-standard ways and many are especially gifted in visualization.

No argument there. Tom Scholz is another example. However, few have achieved the level of Brian May, especially in such an esoteric field.

NH is still the first to return pictures of an object from the Kuiper belt.

NASA has now visited every planet, former planet, dwarf planets, numerous asteroids, operated numerous rovers on Mars, returned photos of a kuiper belt object and operated at least a couple of spacecraft in interplanetary space. In the realm of unmanned spaceflight NASA is unrivaled.

They have done rather well in the manned space flight realm as well.

It would probably cost almost as much to fake it as it did to do it for real.

Yes, they're certainly ahead there too but not to the extent of unmanned. The Soviets/Russians match and in cases exceed some NASA manned achievements, but in the unmanned arena NASA is far far ahead of everyone, even far ahead of the combined efforts of everyone else.

True but we are no longer in communication with those two satellites.

Yes we are, and getting information about the heliopause etc from them.

Of the 5 objects that have reached solar sytem escape velocity, we've only lost contact with Pioneer 10 and 11 and that was expected.

It's when we lose contact with Voyager 6 that I'm going to start worrying...

Ah ok. Thanks for correcting me! smile

That's truly amazing that we are still getting data from the Voyager probes.

Nice Star Trek: TMP reference by the way. smile

Well, I have to disagree here since IMO nothing matches the landings on the moon and the Space Shuttle program when it comes to manned achievements.

Resuming, so far only NASA was able to put a human being on another celestial body.

It should not be a contest anymore. The shared knowledge should supercede any thoughts about who did what first.

Competition breeds more success and advancement than cooperation does.
