What's funny with many of the sim listings is most of those "flightsims" would be considered arcade by today's standards. When I think of arcade I think of fast paced action, a running score, X number of lives, unlimited ammo, etc. I don't consider these old sims arcade, just simpler and limited by the the technology they were developed under. Another way to look at it is.... What's funny with many of the recent sim listings is most of these "flightsims" would be considered sterile by yesterday's standards.

I played the heck out of that game. It had some great missions, the skydive without a parachute and the laser alarm dodging stand out as some of my favourite FPS missions to this day. And the theme music was great!
The music was indeed really well done. In fact, Monolith is one of my all-time favorite developers. I absolutely loved their NOLF games, Tron 2.0, Fear, Alien vs. Predator 2 and the relatively recent Shadow of Mordor/War LOTR games. I had entirely forgotten that Monolith developed NOLF. I am also a big fan of the LOTR games! What's funny with many of the sim listings is most of those "flightsims" would be considered arcade by today's standards. My main criticism of the IL-2 series as well as the DCS universe is that the rivet-counting has taken over everything, to the detriment of the gameplay.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

. I've never understood why Russian developers don't get the atmosphere thing--this sterility seemed to start with IL-2 and only grew worse from there. It's too bad that all Western developers dropped the military flight sim genre.

I would have to agree Mr_Blastman. The complexity for instance of Tornado was just about right for me so I would be happy with just updated graphics as per the topic title.

Sounds like DCS, IL2...... il2 actually were expansion with new theather and planes. DCS turned into #%&*$#, we were promised integrated battlefield then they started doing eras planes but not eras theather. while charging the price of a game.

Jane's WWII Fighters -- if only to take one last Sentimental Journey in its virtual sky. JWW2F was one of the first PC games I owned and without a doubt it was the title that hooked me on flight sims. (I'm hoping for great things with the upcoming "IL-2 Battle of Bodenplatte.")

Well, I just started playing Mount and Blade today.
DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME.
It's crazy addictive. :P
Kinda like Defender of the Crown meets Sid Meier's "Pirates!"
And keeping with the theme of this thread, I'd love an update to it to bring it up to current graphical standards. The gameplay, however, is solid. But be warned, once you start playing... you can't stop. Try some mods. I can recommend Anno Domini 1257, which is set in Europe, North Africa, and Outremer. https://www.moddb.com/mods/anno-domini-1257I can also recommend The Last Days (of The Third Age) mod, set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-last-days

There's just too many ways to play and then you can throw mods on top of it. I never liked the Fire and Sword or Napoleonic Wars expansions though. Guns just weren't as fun. Can't wait for Bannerlord to come out.

1. X-Wing/Tie Fighter 2. European Air War. I've ordered IL-2: Bodenplatte- love my P-47. The "10 Days of Autumn" and "Blazing Steppe" campaigns do add atmosphere but could do more in that department. 3. System Shock- One of the scariest games despite its early graphics. Was too far ahead of its time, miles ahead of Doom2 which was out at the same time. 4. Jedi Knight- Dark Forces II 5. Mechwarrior 2 6. Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear.
Of course, these games would have be released in VR as well.
