Hey Guys,

I been looking into getting a new Router as I just upgraded to Xfinity 1Gig service.. Now my current Router is a D-Link DIR-879. The LAN seems ok but the wirless is really not that good speed wise.. I was hoping maybe upgrading to a new Router will fix that..

I tried upgrading an old Router a DLink DGL-5500 with Open WRT, but it can not even get 250Mbps on the internet speedtest on LAN.. The DIR 879 works ok but the wireless is poor like 50Mbps.. I can get 200Mbps on a Wireless adapter but it is only N on my PC..

The devices I have a re a Iphone 7s and some laptops with 5GHZ AC Capable.. Would a new Router help I was looking at several but they are rather spendl like 300+USD..

These are the 2 devices I was looking at:

1. TP Link Archer 5400X AC5400
2. Asus RT-AX88U AX6000

now the Asus has the new AX Spec and was wondering if it was worth getting in on it now.. If you have another Router to suggest I am All ears but here are some requirements I have:


1. Quad core CPU 64 bit would be nice. 1.4 ghz or faster
2. 1GB RAM
3. Wireless speeds faster then 500Mbps. Real World Speed not theoretical
4. the cheaper better
5. 4-8 LAN Ports..
6. MU-MIMO, Beamform

I have nominal 100Mbps service to my house. Good news for me, wired it runs at 118Mbps actual to a city 125 miles away in an on-line speed test. Not as fast as you are interested in. However, for what its worth;;;

I have a new (for me) ASUS AC2900 WiFi Dual-band Gigabit Wireless Router with 1.8GHz Dual-core Processor (RT-AC86U). $170 in our area. It claims over 2900Mbps using multi-channel concurrently. I have no way to easily test that.

In the internet speed test, the RT-AC86U does the full 118Mbps over 5GHz WiFi. The WiFi is all inside the house -- part of my LAN which includes many hard wired and 3 WiFi routers (all of which go through the RT-AC86U as the central router). The test was at over 60+ feet through 6 walls (I just measured it for you). It was directly over the air -- not using any wire. The HTPC (Ryzen 5 2400G) at the other end (sending WiFi signal to RT-AC86U which puts it on the internet) uses a single small $17 WiFi USB antenna not ideally placed. At 2.4GHz I get better indicated signal strength at over 75ft -- but only 80Mbps over WiFi in the internet speed test.

EDIT: The internet test transmits from the RT-AC86U to the HTPC at 118Mbps. However, the internet test only asks for 11Mbps coming from HTPC through the RT-AC86U. So, I don't know how well the little antenna on the HTPC actually transmits.

I'm not selling them Just info FWIW.
