Never forget.

RIP to all the US civilians and military personnel who died that day.

Not generally recognised over here; but without this unfortunate event bring the US into the conflict, especially with a 'Germany First' policy, British History may have been detrimentaly different.

"Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.1

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation."

This was a masterful speech in many ways.

And boy, did the Japanese pay top dollar for the attacks.

No survivors of the USS Arizona that are alive today--and there are 5 of them--will be making an appearance at the Arizona for the first time ever. This is due to the travel being too hard on them now; they are all in their 90s.

Sad, that generation is coming to pass...

My grandmother felt Pearl Harbor Day was extremely important. She would write me a letter every year about it. She had found out on the 2nd that she was pregnant with my aunt. It became a yearly tradition that I called her and we spoke about it. On December 7th 2012 we had a lot going on and wanted to get to our safety brief right after lunch. I was still learning the ropes of the Army and I decided to skip lunch. I figured I would call my grandmother after we were released for the weekend. At 1400 the CPT did the safety brief and as soon as I got outside I grabbed my phone and called my grandmother's cell phone (It was a flip phone).

My mother answered, she told me my grandmother fell. She broke 5 ribs, but would be ok and released in a few days. Since I had just gotten to my duty station and went on PMT for a month, I hadn't gotten my vehicle picked up. Well, unfortunately, I kept calling and she was always on pain meds and not very lucid or was asleep. Doctors were very confident she was doing well. She was breathing ok and was handling the pain well. After the weekend she took a turn for the worst. Monday morning she was talkative to the doctor and the doctor told my mother she was doing well and would probably be out of the hospital in two week. He came back in the evening and after checking on her, told her and my mother that her heart was failing and she wouldn't be leaving the hospital. He said that she had probably three weeks left to live. Seven days after she fell she slipped into eternity on December 14th. For a week I had planned on getting a rental car, but missions kept delaying it. Finally, I was able to get a rental car. I drove as fast as I could, but she went into the coma while I was an hour away and passed when I was less than 30 minutes away. Fitting she fell on a day that was one of her most important days in her life.

I walked into the room she was at in full uniform, walked over, kissed her, and fell to my knees balling like a child. I lost my last grandparent.

There are currently 5 living USS Arizona survivors. For the first time in decades, maybe the first time since 12/07/41, none were able to be present on the anniversary of the attack.

We are loosing the Greatest Generation rapidly.

EDIT- WHOOPS. JUST SAW BONES POST!

I believe it's time to watch "Tora, Tora, Tora" again.
