I actually got my first confirmed victory with no witnesses (as a German). I lingered over our assigned balloon longer than the rest of my flight (Jasta 41) and decided to scare away anybody that might show up. when some Sopwith Strutter single-seaters showed up. one flew away deeper into our lines while the other one got into a lengthy turning fight with me. I shot him up pretty badly and he crashed about a mile behind enemy lines.

I've never gotten a victory confirmed with no witnesses on the normal victory claims setting before. I made the claim, against my thoughts to the contrary, because I figured I should have an explanation for why I arrived home with nearly half of my ammo gone. at least the balloon was in sight when I started fighting.

I've had similar encounters in the same squadron where I was defending a balloon, shot down an enemy, and put in a claim with my squad mates as witnesses and it got denied. guess my mates were too far away to notice what was going on. this time I decided to forego the witnesses since they were miles away when I got into that fight.

I think you owe a bottle of champagne to your local Flakartillerie battalion for phoning this one in to HQ!

As Albert Mayes in the Centernary DiD challenge, I had an alarming amount of No Witnesses confirmed (on realistic settings), in the mud and even in enemy lines! I wonder if the game 'files reports' for other pilots that 'saw' your victories....

I think that the victory system is ... ENIGMATIC! Every time I think I understand it, something inexplicable happens.

I spent four years recording all the aerial victories for a '100 Years Ago Today' thread. You would be surprised at the amount of victories that were awarded on the say-so of the pilot alone. From von Richthofen, Fonck and McCudden on down, pilots were credited for enemy planes that actually turned around and made it home safely, some of them with no damage at all. The Germans are sometimes commended for their "much stricter" validation methods, yet even they had an amazing number of uncredited "kills".

Some people are born stupid. I've had to work hard my whole life to get this way. I'm proud of the job I've done

When I did fly alone, I have had one confirmed shoot down over friendly land and one over enemy-land, which was not confirmed. I think it is comprehensibly.

As I mentioned it in Wish-List, it's helpfull to use an observer balloon or a ground unit as witness, when they’re nearly and when I’m alone in the air. That would be logic in my opinion.
