The first part of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries aired on the SciFi Channel.
Oh my how time flies.

No but I highly recommend that you at least give the miniseries a shot. I'm fairly confident you will enjoy it.

Man card? No, but you do have to turn in your sci-fi fan card!

It seemed to have been a bit of a love it or hate it thing. Personally, I didn't like the old Galactica much, but loved the new series (even if the ending was so-so). I'd call it one of the best science fiction shows ever made. It is, of course, still a matter of taste and personal preference.

Comparing the original BSG with the reimagined series is like comparing the Adam West Batman 60's tv show with the Chris Nolan Batman movies from a few years ago.

Well, sure, they were entirely different in concept. But I was never much of a fan of the super-sterile world of Star Trek; BSG of course is anything but. Also, the original Galactica series was IMO obviously aimed at a kids audience, the new one definitely not. Also, one little detail that I liked was to emphasize that this was a struggle of survival for the human race by displaying the head count of the fleet at the beginning of each episode (and occasionally in the president's office as the government's most important metric), so you could see how many lives were lost in the previous episode (needless to say, the numbers were usually going down substantially).

If you like science fiction and especially dark and intelligent science fiction then you are really missing out if you've never seen the new BSG.

I will be showing my ignorance here, because as I said I've never seen an episode. Are the Cylons now in human form? I hate that,I like to know who my enemy is.

SOME of the Cylon models are in human form but there are other models that are robotic. The Centurion is also in the new show.

I've been watching through the BSG reboot for the first time over the past several months, and have about ten episodes to go. There I paused and began another series for a short break. I've loved the show so far, and really love the gritty "military" feel. The political correctness has been kept to a minimum, and the show truly feels like watching something oldschool where content, plot and story matters more than modern issues. My one issue, though, is later in the series the show begins to drag things out for the sake of doing so, especially the second half of season 3, but I can overlook that because the quality is so high for the rest of the show. There have been some plot decisions I haven't been very keen on but for the most part the writers have done a pretty good job of writing themselves out of a corner, and with the whole cylons looking like humans vs humans thing and where they take the plot has well... been quite interesting.
Great show. All science fiction buffs should see it, and I wish there were more like this.

I don't know what you've seen recently but there are still quite a lot of really good scifi shows being made. They're just on streaming services though and not on broadcast tv.

Best TV show I've ever watched. GOT a very close second...even got my wife into BSG even though she never really "likes" SciFi. Got her to watch one episode that was it, she was hooked too.

Any you'd recommend? The Expanse is my favorite recent sci-fi series, but I'm open to more.

Not for everyone, such is life.
I also got my wife hooked on BSG. She didn't care for Westworld though. Ah well, you can't win them all!

Binge watched BSG harder than any other TV show! Wasn't sure if the wife would get into it at first, but she was always the first to say "One more episode!".
West World never really grabbed either of us, but we'll probably still watch the second season.

Be prepared. Season 2 is even more enigmatic than season 1.

I really enjoyed season 1 even though I was determined not to like it. I was delighted to see Thandie Newton had a starring role. I became a big fan of hers when I saw her in The Chronicles of Riddick. Such a stunningly beautiful woman.
I do have season 2 on my watch list though so at some point I'll get to see more of her.

Thandie Newton is absolutely great as “Maeve”. I’m pretty sure I first noticed her in Mission Impossible 2 which came out 18 years ago!

I just finished BSG for the 3rd time last night and enjoyed it as much as I did the 2nd time. The first time through I thought it was “meh” for some reason, maybe because of how militarily inept the Colonials were. But I’d have to say that the quality I probably like best is that there are no supermen - the characters all have weaknesses, don’t know what to do at times and have to muddle through the best they can, and exhibit all the failings and quirks that humans have. We watched some of them rise to the occasion and others disappointed us.
I really liked the ending, in my opinion Daybreak Part 3 is right up there with the series finale of M*A*S*H for poignancy. After the near annihilation of the human race and 4 years of hell searching for a new home, Fate/God/the FSM apparently felt that some characters hadn’t suffered enough already. One thing I haven’t been able to figure out, though, is
why Cavil blew his brains out after Tyrol killed Tori. Was it because with Tori dead the humanoid Cylons wouldn’t be getting resurrection?

Correct, Tyrol killing Tory during the data stream transfer interrupted the process of the resurrection data being saved. Once that was lost, Cavil decided to end it all since he was tired of living in a highly limited human body.

But they would have been resurrected into those same highly limited human bodies. Or did he think they’d be able to modify them?

Yes, that was Cavil's big project and obsession. He wanted to maintain cylon resurrection but with using a much more advanced and most likely mechanical/cyborg body.

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet. I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

BSG (reboot) is still a mystery to me in some ways. When I first saw a scene or two when it was originally broadcast, I was pretty sure that it was not my cup of tea. 99% of the time my instincts seem to be right, but BSG was different. Why? I'm not sure, but for whatever reason, I got caught up in it in a big way.

I was somewhat the same.
My initial reaction to Starbuck being recast as female was negative, but that worked out well. Although her self-destructive aspect was, IMO, overdone (in writing, not acting).
A really good series overall.

The BSG reboot proved to me that if you have the right people involved and the right vision, you can often supercede the original.
I will say though that it’s a bit unfair to compare the original BSG with the reboot because both shows were aimed at very different audiences.

Do I need to hand in my man card if I admit I've never seen even one episode?
Why? I didn't like the re-boot's feel or characters. The BSG I knew had Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict and Lorne Greene and that's hard to shake. I also hate, absolutely HATE the "TV shows need a plot twist every other second" mentality. It doesn't make me interested. It makes me bored to think that the plot is itself an unseen character, as if the story is accepted as weak so something else needs to grab me. Gosh they could have done that aspect better if you ask me. Seems like a waste.
However I loved the way the re-boot was made. First class production, all the way.
