That's very kind of you Jeanba - I appreciate the input. Still have to get to tweaking the Spad 13 types (to include an early, 200hp variant). Currently busy with some FE2 fm tweaks but I will look into those models for WOFFue over the next couple of months.

Some of our good skinners and 3-d modellers for WOFFue, or OBD if they like, would of course have to look into making an accurate model of the early Spad 13, with the nice, rounded wing tips. Top speed on the early Spad 13 should be close to or somewhat slower than the 180hp Spad 7 (about 205 to 210 kph), and with a slightly worse climb rate than the 180 Spad 7, also lazier aileron authority (this is why the ailerons were once again "squared" on the later Spad 13 variants). Always found that a bit of a mystery considering that rounded or tapered ailerons should, theoretically, be more efficient than squarish ones. Protruding ones such as on the v-strutter Albies should be even less efficient, and the extended ones on the Fokk. Dr.1 and D.VII variants the worst (heaviest to operate) of all. Traditionally it's noted that wing warping is the worst of the bunch but it's possible that warping, properly done, is better than protruding ailerons as on the Fokk. Triplane.

In terms of my FM update packs, I will do two more iterations, first combing over the early Nieups. and looking through the v-strutter Albies (focusing on top speed, climb rate, etc.), and then going over the Spad 13 variants.

Happy flying,

Of course the SPAD VII 150 HP and 180 HP used the same frame and wings, so no difference.

The SPAD XIII 200 HP has slightly different wing tips than the SPAD XIII 220 HP, but you just have to use what is given you and go with the flow since and any distance you can not tell the difference between the two. winkngrin

Noice!

So where do you get these and how does one install them into WOFF UE?

Sometimes yes, sometimes not.
Engine and airframe were treated quite independantly and lot of Spad 200hp were updated to 220 or 235 hp. The wing was updated if needed, if not ...

My point is that the lack of Spad 7/13 variants was really missing, and as a french aircraft lover, that was spoiling all my interest for playing after late 1916.
So I did not play WOFF very often : now I play it more often as I can play the campaigns I want
What is missing for a "true update" is the avilability of all variants simultaneously and their affectation to units
Additionnally, I trust you for your work in FE2.

The Spad XII is funny, but it is somewher between the VII and the XIII, needs a lot of changes

Hadn't even thought about the Spad XII but it would be an excellent addition - we have one for FE2...shouldn't be too much of a problem to carry some of the FM data over for WOFFue. I will look into this once I comb through the early Nieups. and v-strutter Albies...so many fun things to do but often real work gets in the way. If I remember my readings correctly, the Spad XII should come with two power-plant variants at least...a 200hp Hisso, and the 220hp Hisso too - this should provide for different performance envelopes. And it is a heavier beast than the Spad VII, possibly also slightly heavier than the Spad XIII. This means somewhat stiffer aileron authority, possibly also less rudder control than on the 7/13 Spad variants. Top speeds should be somewhere between about 205 and 215 kph, depending on the Hisso variant used, and climb rate poorer than for the Spad XIII.

If you create the SPAD XII then the end user will need two joy sticks! The SPAD XII had 'Bleriot controls' so one stick is for elevator and the other is for ailerons. The two stick arrangement allows for the recoil of the engine hub mounted canon. The modder will need to fill the cockpit with the haze of the fumes of weapon discharge, too!

Too afraid to fight Spads ?
The main problem is the lack of Spad 7 150hp, which make things very unbalanced in early 1917 and there is a very large "hole" in the planeset making complelty unhistorical any campaign on the french front (french or german) in this period.

I played a lot Spads and boom and Zoom attacks are very efficient.
When I went back to Nieuport, I lost at least two pilots, finding myself cornered by Albies

Since it got its own thread...yes, the different engine sizes on the various Spads should be used in the game most certainly.
Don’t worry about the very slightly different (or not at all) aircraft models between them. That can be saved to a time you are really bored and have a lot of time on your hands.

I may be remembering wrong, and I may have missed someone already mentioning it, but didn't the French experiment with a 300hp SPAD? Or am I thinking of the 230...

according to Davilla and Soltan there were two prototype SPAD XIII that were fitted with 300hp engines for testing in September of 1918. one was armed with two machine guns and the other appears to have had a 37 mm cannon mounted to fire through the propeller hub. I don't know if this was in addition to the two deck machine guns or if one of them was removed.

neither of these moved past the testing stage as the French decided that the SPAD XVII and SPAD XX were more promising.

the SPAD XII would be fun.

can I assume that the SPAD VII we have in the game has the engine description as the 150hp variant but it actually performs like the 180hp variant?

once you remember that the plane has really savage and unforgiving stall characteristics because of it's thin wing... it's not all bad. your kite is very fast, can dive away from just about anything, and is reasonably tough. the planes I flew most often in "Hat in the Ring" were the SPAD VII and the Roland C.II. and they both seem to fare well with the same sort of tactics. good pre-battle preparation and positioning, avoid turning battles, and don't allow yourself to get too slow. use your speed to create separation and don't be afraid to disengage.

I'm just glad we don't have the really early versions that didn't have the fuel pump. you could try to put your plane into a 20-degree climb and then the engine would cut out because the fuel couldn't reach the engine!

[oops, jeanba beat me too it!]
