Hi All,
This is my build of the Airfix 1/48 Lightning F.6 scrambling to intercept. It's posed over a runway blur base from Coastal Kits. I had an old lighting kit lying around and decided to install it. Unfortunately the LEDs aren't bright enough to cope with the tight bends I had to put in the fibre optics for the wing tip lights so they can't be seen. The spine light works though, and I'm pleased with the afterburner glow. (It's actually more violet / blue in real life, but I had to boost the contrast of the photo and it's changed the hue a little.)

This is a peach of a kit, perhaps Airfx's best.

Thanks for looking in,
Gareth

Excellent model of my favourite aircraft

Edit: my only thing I could say is that the nose wheel is too far retracted, it is usually the last to go up and after the mains have already retracted.

Thanks guys. I used a bit of artistic licence on the nose gear, as it didn’t tell the story when posed as it should be.

Absolutely beautiful Goon. Stunning plane and a great looking kit. The base and support is wicked too, doesn't detract from the model at all like many do.

I almost don't dare to ask because the entire thing is so beautiful... but... would it really have taken off with full flaps in the QRA/Minimum Time to Altitude profile?

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm not 100% sure about use of flaps on take off for intercept to be frank. They were separate parts already and so it was partly easier to fit and partly about the dynamics of the 'pose'. Thanks for noticing the base Ajay, making the support unobtrusive was a big part of this one. The plane attaches with magnets, and it was my original intention to make this a universal base so that I could attach some different models in the future. Unfortunately the best attachment point for the Lightning is too far back to work universally, but some other very swept wing aircraft might work.

Happy Birthday Gareth cheers

The flaps can be used on take off, it is part of the after take-off checklist to raise them, Personally I have not seen them used, but I can ask as I do know of a few Lightning pilots

The F.6 used flaps on take off but the other marques didn't smile

Thanks Alicatt! Had a great day. I do like when details are correct by accident! I must do another one of these kits.

Great build! Agree on that being Airfix’s best kit.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
