It's very rare when this happens for me but one immediate example that comes to my mind is "2001: A Space Odyssey".

I prefer the 1997 film (and the book it was based on) covering the 1983 fire on the K219, "Hostile Waters" (with a few improvements for dramatic effect - the fire and explosion being initiated by a collision with the Augusta (as claimed by the Soviets), rather than merely being a mechanical failure (as claimed by the Captain of the K219 and the US) ~ though a later collision of a USN SSN with one of the responding Delta SSBN while it was transiting home is known to have occurred, so is not utterly implausible, and only sets up the race to save the crew and vessel which is the meat of the book and film.

HfRO is broadly based on this event, but is exaggerated and is writ too big for my tastes.

All this talk about submarine movies and what, no love for U-251?

I havent read the first one to compare to the movie but Firefox Down gets tied up in filling out pages more than cloak and dagger espionage..Just dont feel the edge of the seat like a movie.

It's a bit long, but I gotta disagree with not having enough edge of the seat stuff (spoilers)...

Escaping the wreck
Escaping Moscow
Escaping the crash/hidden site *in the repaired plane*

But there are some parts I skip now, especially regarding Dmitri's wife that I don't feel adds anything to the story.

I read an early Navy press edition of Red October while sitting in jury duty. I loved the movie. It was lightly edited after Clancy wrote it, not quite a publishers promo copy, but close. It made me realize that Tom Clancy NEEDS to pay his editors A LOT! I don't even think he uses spell check. The writing/grammer was poor, I found out later the heavy edited version was drastically better. My writing without editing would be a joke, full disclosure.

Red October is my all time fav movie, as Rainbow Six is my all time fav game. I guess it´s a Clancy thing I got. I havent red the book though, but have red K19 The Widowmaker and found that a great read. I have always been a sub freak and played alot of Jane´s 688i Hunter/Killer and Dangerous Waters. Book is quite detailed...

Back on the Tom Clancy subject, has anybody red "Into the Storm"? After seeing the below interview a couple of days ago I have been thinking on buying it.

Nobody's a fan of Run Silent, Run Deep?

I am! But Lancaster's best "WWII" film must be The Train

What kind of car is that? What does it matter? When I drive it, I'm Steve McQueen

Have RSRD on DVD and watch it quite often. So yes I would have to claim to be a fan, at a minimum. smile

You guys that haven't read HRO the book really need to get on it, stat! The movie was good, but the book is better.

The only movie that immediately comes to mind that I thought was better than the book is Jaws. I read the book several years ago after watching the movie lots of times, and, frankly, I thought the book really sucked. Bad.

But Hostile Waters is a film on the same subject that I preferred strongly. And the book is also probably better, but not as dramatically as in the case of HRO and it's book.

A *real* boomer in it's Eastern Seaboard patrol zone with a missile transient. A boomer on the surface with no information from Moscow... Far more interesting than a story made up based on those events and some wishful thinking.
