One long expensive upgrade

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

The picture they use doesnt look like the ship in it's current shape.

This is a fairly recent pic.

Well, you wouldn't expect them to use the photo you posted, biggrin

I’m trying to feel bad about it, but can’t seem to get there.

Is it just me or does it seem like almost everything Russian is substandard and in dis-repair?

Seems the Russians are victims of their own budgetary shortfalls and constraints. Tragic for the workers and their families, but further evidence of nefarious behavior in the highest echelons of Russia's ruling leadership.

Look at it this way,

In 2017 Russia's GDP was slightly more than that of Australia which is a country with only about 15% the population. Russia simply doesn't have the money to support such a huge military infrastructure and force composition.

And yet they still retain a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and have a leadership desperate to maintain it past status as a world power.... that is a dangerous recipe.

Only two things are preventing Russia from losing all of its global influence: Nukes and oil. I can certainly see why the Russian leadership is desperate to hold onto them.

Their military budget is technically adequate, given their relatively modest military goals, however the problem lies with the notoriously apathetic Russian character.

Lots of things that should be taken for granted simply don't get done in Russia, unless those responsible are given strong motivation.

This was certainly the case even back in Soviet times when they basically wrote a blank cheque as far as military spending.

France has a larger GDP than Russia.

Still can’t seem to get to where I feel bad about it. So I guess that I am just going to accept that I don’t.

Not in PPP terms, where they're number 6 in the world, just behind Germany.

The Soviet/Russian Navy has never been much to write about (with apologies to Mr. Clancy).

Their military strength lies in lots and lots of people and lots and lots of stuff. It's an old doctrine they have - "Quantity has it's own quality."

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

You’d think they would have learned about being bankrupted by unsustainable military spending back in the 80s.

They weren't really running their own country at that point...

I thought it was so dilapidated it's more of a liability. Doesn't it go everywhere with support ships, like a sea-borne road-side rescue.
